(The setting of this short story takes place seventy years from the time we last saw Shane. The year is 2073, and the Chasing Horse family is still on the Lakota reservation.)
On a bright and hopeful morning, the birds chirp and the air smells as if the world was reborn overnight and nothing was in the air but the sun. A young Edward wakes up in his fresh linen sheets and can smell the bacon and eggs that mom is cooking in the kitchen. It 's a perfect day. Saturday. Nothing can go wrong.
Edward gets out of bed and walks towards the kitchen, and he was right; eggs, bacon, and chocolate milk. It was gearing up to be a perfect day.
"So what do you plan on doing today?" asked Edward 's mother.
"I think I am just going to watch cartoons and maybe see if John wants to hang out,” answered Edward. …show more content…
He had always wanted to believe that his dad would come back, but he knew in the back of his mind that he wasn 't. Now he knew in the front of his mind too.
"Hey Grandpa, could you tell us that story of Eagle Boy while we 're here?"
"I 'm afraid I don 't remember it anymore. I think it 's these stupid meds these nurses put in my pudding."
"Come on, you used to always tell us stories. Why not now?"
"I told you, I don 't remember them. Besides, they wouldn 't matter now."
A little piece of Dawson died when Grandpa said that. All the stories Grandpa used to tell gave him hope that there was some sort of future he could make for himself. That some day all of his life right now, would be gone.
"Hey Layla, why don 't you take Jace and play dolls while I talk to Grandpa."
"Okay-dokay!"
Layla grabbed Jace as if she weighed nothing and found a spot by the rose bushes. She brought out her dolls and started making stories in her head.
"Grandpa, you have got to help us. Corrie has come home and he doesn 't seem like he is going to leave anytime soon. I don 't want the girls to grow up with
