It is saying that the wife’s have no say, Chudleigh claims that “Wife and servant are the same” (904). It is making the husband look as if he is the law or as if he is god. Just like in Boys and girls by Alice Munro it is claiming that women are just helpless. They are just there to take care of the husband’s needs and any obligation with the children. In Girl by Jamaica Kincaid we see the same pattern as in To the Ladies. In the short story Girl, we have the mother talking to her daughter giving her advice and guidance of how to do chores. The mother is trying to teach her daughter everything she knows even though she is still young like Devor said “children absorb the generalized standard of society into their personal concept of what is correct behavior” (426).
