College Should Be Free
Bob Samuels in his article claims that all public higher education should be free, and the policy even could save money for our country. Samuels states that everyone who studies in colleges or universities is paying more right now than what they actually need for school; as a result, it causes low graduation rates for schools. Also, Samuels states that the reason why students drop out of higher education is that they cannot afford the higher cost of tuition, so making public higher education free is necessary. If many students go to colleges, fewer people would be unemployed and in need of governmental assistance, therefore our government can save more money for other needed services. What’s more is that Samuels thinks

Students who get adequate funds will be more confident to focus on study. It is easy to imagine the feeling that we can get assistance from financial aid. With the assistance of funds, we don’t need to worry about working and balancing how long we should study and how much we need to pay. We only need to focus on study, so we can get enough confidence to study in college. Besides, it is more significant to relieve the stress on students and their parents. For example, my best friend Tom lived in a low- income family. His parents worked in a Japanese restaurant, and their salary was about 3,600 dollars each month, so the low income was difficult to support his family, let alone Tom’s educational fees. Thanks to the financial aid, Tom didn’t need to pay much higher fees for college. He could spend his time studying in college instead of working, and his parents didn’t need to take two, three or four jobs to earn money for Tom, so it reduced stress on them. Now, Tom has graduated from college and works at a computer company. What’s more, many students are willing to take a loan in order to graduate. For instance, my cousin Kelly graduated from college 5 years ago. She told me that the financial aid had made higher education seem to be riskless; she didn’t need to pay a lot of tuition, but there were other fees and expenses for her to pay which financial aid didn’t cover. So it gave her courage to take a …show more content…
Some people argue that colleges should not be free because it would waste too much taxpayers’ money. I respect their thinking, but the thinking is incomplete. As taxpayers, we all pay taxes, so we should all have direct benefits. The reason why we pay taxes is to fund all the things what we need in society. Taxes are paid for the police, for the roads and for the social security etc. Free education means paying more taxes for better education. Besides, education is one of the most important factors for the development of a country, so funding on education doesn’t mean waste; on the contrary, it is necessary to improve everyone’s lives. Free college doesn’t only mean that it will be beneficial for the students. It also means that it will stimulate the economy of our country and benefit our whole society. Keep the free college moving, and we will be creating a beautiful homeland right

In this way, the free college policy does not effectively save money for most of the American parents. Some people like Bernie Sanders may suggest that the Wall Street speculators would be another method of supporting the young students for college. However, it is impossible for those speculators to spend their money on profitless projects. Besides, many students are not able to pay the loan back until many years after their graduation so it would be unrealistic to ask Wall Street speculators to support the public education. Thus, the free public college is not absolutely financially…

Should College Be Free in America? Every year in America, thousands of new high school graduates pack their bags, move to new cities, and sign papers accepting loans they might not be able to pay back. Parents shovel out thousands to colleges, with the risk of their child neglecting the responsibility of study, and dropping their courses. Students who do not qualify for scholarships have to use up time that would allow them to study properly because they need to get part-time jobs in order to just stay in college. School is a necessary system worldwide to invest in a society 's future. The primary argument as to why educational institutions should be free in the U.S. is not to give everyone the equal opportunity to education as stated by Lawrence (a professor of History emeritus at SUNY Albany) although it is one of the reasons, the primary reason is to increase the number of educated workers to hopefully improve our economy. It is stated that an “educated work force has become an essential component of economic growth and competitiveness (Student Aid Alliance). However, college tuition filters out those who are not willing to pay for their education and also funds universities so that they are able to function and upgrade their facilities. College should not be free because it would lead to tax raises, the value of a degree would decline, and the overall quality of the educational environment would decrease.…
