One example is the work of Wangari Maathai. Maathai was a Kenyan woman who won the Nobel Prize for her efforts with land rights relating to women issues in developing nations (lecture week 11 and 15). She noticed that the cattle and children in Kenya were malnourished. The women were also malnourished. This malnourishment was due to the women not having enough wood to cook healthy food over. Thus, the mothers and children were eating less nutritious food than before the wood shortage. They did not have enough wood to cook over because men were cutting down massive number of trees to use for lumber. This made it harder for the women to prepare meals because gathering wood took longer than it used to. It took longer because the women had to travel farther from home to gather wood. We should watch individual countries for progress with specific issues. For example, Nepal is very affected by sex trafficking and is making progress toward ending this issue. They are creating organizations and support systems to help victims of sex trafficking. They also are getting the perpetrators caught. (Country Research week 13). For the world, we should watch for poverty decrease. We should watch for this because poverty affects many other aspects of life, including someone’s life span and health. Decreasing poverty will cause improvements in health-related issues in countries where there is a lot of poverty. This is because as a country develops more they will have more advanced and sanitary medical equipment. Thus, the health of the country 's population will increase. It will finally increase their lifespan due to having better health care. Finally, we should be watching for improvements of gender issues in countries we normally do not hear about. Many countries that we do not hear about have gender issues present in that country and are making progress toward ending these issues.
