Bilbo Baggins is a small hobbit who is unadventurous and fond of the great comforts of his home life. Although he inherited an adventurous streak from the Tooks, he is often afraid and cowardly in the face of difficulties. This is the conflict with Bilbo pretty much throughout the story so far. Once he meets the dwarves and makes them tea, he doesn't like how messy they are. Asked by Gandalf to join the dwarves on an expedition, he's thinking more about food, his pipe, and his handkerchief. In the beginning, the dwarves doubt Bilbo's abilities, his worth, and his heroism, just as Bilbo doubts himself, but as the story goes on, Bilbo is showing just how lucky he is.
