Analysis Of Better Days By Goo Dolls

Improved Essays
When reading about Better Days, I thought that the Goo Goo Dolls were singing about a much different topic that I was thinking about. I thought the Goo Goo Doll were singing about a brand new year and wiping the slate clean. People who celebrate New Year’s often believe that every year is exactly what it says to be, a new year – a new year to wipe the slate clean from mistakes or broken resolutions; to start over on life; to be a kinder person, which falls under the broken resolutions category; to simply start over. Every New Year, people get the chance to start over and make a change in their lives, and even the world. However, after reading an article about the Better Days song, I thought wrong.
Better Days was released in September

“ It would be neat, if with the New Year” by Jimmy Baca is a short poem, which holds a deep significance about the past and future, about things that have been parts of our ordinary life. In the poem, the speaker desires a fresh start in his life, but in the end he soon realizes that he can never throw away his past to move on completely. With the skillful uses of symbolism, metaphor, imagery, and narrative poetry, the author successfully leads the mystery and depth of the poem to the readers. To begin with, Baca purposely creates a diversion in the title and the first two sentences to surprise the reader later in the poem. As first, he believes that moving on is the right thing, “It would be neat if with the New Year” (line 1), which shows…

According to Floyd, “summertime” was the opening song written by George Gershwin for his folk opera porgy and Bess in 1935 which was an easy lullaby (218). Summertime was an aria and it is somewhat attributed to Ira Gershwin. The song became a well-liked hit and to a great extent recorded jazz standard and its lyrics written by Dubose Heyward who is the author of novel porgy. This song was been labeled as on the classics by many and to a large extent a xenophobic minstrel by others. Regardless of Gershwin’s good will, Floyd exemplifies that George’s work was contentious and was damned for its so-called orthodox representation of the black American life (219).…
