In Betsy’s H. essay “Disturbing the Universe” we are given the argument to act or not to act. This essay is more of a battle within yourself, the sentence “Everything has its compensations” stands out to me I consider this to be the main idea of the text. Everything that happens throughout my life, your life and everyone’s life are in some way rewarded even if it takes years for this to happen and you possibly might not even see the effect of all that you do in this lifetime. The endangered Loggerhead turtles are in a way her life’s calling but it feels like a hopeless endeavor. Throughout she struggles to find purpose in what she is doing, she doubts herself just like every human does. We all struggle with finding a purpose of why we do what we do. By saving the eggs she is split between the good and bad of it all. On one side saving them from being possibly killed but on the other hand, she is making them vulnerable to relying on themselves. We have to see the dark side and the light side of things for example in the essay the tortoise has a black side and a bright side and so too is our walk through both one of purpose and doubt. Betsy comes to the conclusion of “ I am reminded that in the world today there is no way, anymore not to do something. Even if despite our best efforts there will never again be any Loggerhead turtles.” We have already disturbed the universe what harm could a little more disturbance cause. Even if your lasting impact is left to just a few people or things they would be completely different without you. The path of action she takes is good but we are given the freedom to restore nature or rip it apart even more. Perception vs. Reality Rough Draft Sometimes in life, our memory can be influenced by the emotions we were having at that said time. We can perceive past events differently based on our feelings at the time. Whereas in reality the events may be different. The characters of Marvin, John, and her father Jason Currie are all exemplifications of how Hagar’s perception of them isn’t the reality…

Comment to Eryn Speer from Rachel Garrison I enjoyed your paper overall, the different perspective of the storyteller made the story mysterious and exciting for the viewer. Up until the end I believed that the James we were speaking of was a creature and yet it was a human. Giving the audience a small glimse of what is in store for them during the story in the beginging and changing their expectations complately gives the storyteller the upperhand. Letting every detail of the story draw the viewer into what they believe is going to happen, then switching it around, keeping the reader insterested and questioning.…

In the book Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy by Gary Schmidt the author wants his readers to realize that no matter what others think, you should always stand up for what you believe in even if others think differently. This is shown in the story when Turner Buckminster continues to go to the shore with Lizzie and when Turner’s father confronts the sheriff to stand up for his son. To begin, the author expressed his message through Turner when he continued to go down to the shore even though the town was angry that he was friends with Lizzie Bright because he was African American. The whole town of Phippsburg disliked him for it but Turner saw the good in Lizzie and enjoyed being with her. Therefore, he continued to go down to the shore to see her.…

In this article, Chris Widener tells the audience 10 things he wish he knew before he went out in the real world. These lessons aren’t the type that are taught by teachers, but they are lessons people come to realize just through living life and growing up. At the end, Widener lets the audience know that although there are certainly negative parts of just living life, but life can still be wonderful depending on whether or not you choose to look at life with a positive attitude. While reading this article, I could definitely agree and connect to some of the…

As a freshman in the EC program at Center Grove High School, I wanted to address the controversial topic of whether or not Sonia Nazario’s memoir Enrique’s Journey. I believe that the high school curriculum should include Sonia Nazario’s memoir Enrique’s Journey because it teaches students to appreciate the things they have, and in addition it informs students about the dangers and problems of immigration they never knew.…

Henry David Thoreau uses transcendentalist thinking in “Wild Fruits” to change the viewpoint of someone who placed importance on material acquisitions and pleasures. In the lines 56-59, Thoreau states, “Commonly, the less you get the happier and richer you are…” By this, he means that often times people who have less are happier than people who have more. The people who have more has more to loose and the people who have less have less to loose.…

Moreover, Goodall toured a medical research laboratory and realized that baby chimps located there were not allowed to interact with each other as they were contained in small boxes. Her encounter with a chimp hiding in the back of a box and rocking back and forth in its cage led her to advocate for labs where chimps could interact and be contained in larger cages if research was necessary. Jane not only noticed the maltreatment of laboratory chimps, she persisted in making her demands for improvement known. Her determination led researchers to comply to her suggestions even if they were not originally in support of the changes (Welty, "300 Days"). I do my best to not judge a political figure based on their party affiliation. My dislike of Betsy DeVos has nothing to do with her party preferences; it has everything to do with her political opinions and experiences. As someone raised by two public school teachers and educated on how our school systems work, this woman's policies make me nervous. I have yet to see any piece of information that could possibly change my mind.…

In her book, No Logo (2000), Naomi Klein sheds light on the opposing forces of corporate rule, and seeks to understand the conditions, whether cultural or economic, that mark the emergence of an inevitable political movement still in its early stages. She wants her audience to walk away at the end of the book, aware of the “cracks and fissures beneath [the brands’] high-gloss facade (Klein 18).” The opening chapter, “No Space,” educates the reader on how corporate brands came into existence, when they dominated the market and landscapes, and why they are ubiquitous. Klein also describes brands and logos as more than just images companies utilize to identify themselves with; they possess souls, manipulating consumers.…
