Bernie Sanders: Women’s Rights Bernie Sanders is running for president and has expressed his views on different political issues regarding women’s reproductive health. There’s different opinions surrounding the idea of abortion and women’s reproductive health services. Throughout all of his career Bernie has supported women through voting on various bills dealing with abortion and women’s health. He has supported family planning and funding for contraceptives. He also stands by expanding on health programs such as Planned Parenthood. Bernie Sanders dedication to bettering the lives of women shows through his opinions on abortions, institutions that aid women and provide legal and safe environments for women in a medical setting. “Ban anti-abortion limitations on abortion services. (Nov 2013)” (On The Issues). This is an important bill to vote on because anti-abortion limitations on abortions services could hinder the service itself and would not allow for it to service women to it’s full potential. He wants to protect the right of being able to abort safely and conveniently. “As president, Sen. Sanders will only nominate Supreme Court justices who understand that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land and recognize the rights of women to have access to family planning services.” (Bernie Sanders). Roe v. Wade was a case woman filed a by a woman named Jane Roe, who wanted to safely and legally end her pregnancy, but Texas law stated that it was unlawful to get an abortion unless the woman is in danger. Bernie, stating that he would only elect Supreme Court Justices who understand Roe v. Wade, is another proven point of him being pro women. “Voted NO on banning partial-birth abortions. This bill is an important one because it covers an important issue with different circumstances within the subject of abortion. “Bernie has actively worked to combat restrictions by co-sponsoring a bill that would lift restriction on abortion, known as the Women 's Health Protection Act.” (On The …show more content…
His support can be found from bills he has voted on and what he has said regarding the issues. “Bernie Sanders has consistently fought against Republican attacks on reproductive rights. If elected president, he would increase funding for Planned Parenthood.” (Huffington Post). Funding for Planned Parenthood is important because it’s a service to women and provides a lot of aid. “plans to expand women 's health programs, and access to safe and legal abortions.” (Huffington Post). A lot of other candidates do not support expanding these services or do not fully support abortion. “Bernie voted numerous times to allow women to travel interstate for abortions, supported permitting federal funding of organizations that conduct abortions, voted to increase access and funding for family planning for women.” (Feel The Bern). Voting on these things are very beneficial for women, all of these different bills that Bernie has voted on are in favor in women and their reproductive rights. Bernie’s opponent spoke out on the issue, “Clinton has also been out front on reproductive rights, but her historic refrain that abortion be "safe, legal, and rare" has only served to stigmatize it and justify conservative efforts to impose legal restrictions.” (Huffington Post). Bernie has not made and any stances on restricting any type of limits on abortion. While this seems minor it makes a huge difference in women’s rights.
