Analysis Of Bend It Like Beckham

Improved Essays
The film, Bend it Like Beckham, follows two eighteen year old girls that dream of becoming professional soccer players. The movie not only focuses on soccer but also on how much her family influenced the decisions she took. Not only this but also how the traditions of her culture took over her love and passion for soccer.

This is a full-shot and eye-level shot of Jess’ relatives, who match dissolve the soccer players who were originally there. The fact that they are in front of the penalty shot emphasises how Jess must get around tradition to achieve her goal. During the movie it demonstrates how hard this is for Jess. In most situations, she has to put the needs of her family above her own, even if it leads her away from her dream. A dilemma

On October 28, 2017, I attended Desert Hot Springs High School’s theatrical performance, Love Sick, a play produced by John Cariani. Mr. Landmann is the head director of the theater department at DHSHS and was able to execute a great show with the help of his students: Matilde Alejandro, Megan Johnson, Bethany Navarro, Luis Salazar, Nathaniel Esparza, Natalia Martinez, Angel Limas, Esmeralda Hernandez, Esmeralda Salazar, Nicholas Jacob Gamboa, Baylee Bryant, Jonathan Calderon, Erika Aleman, Jesus Hernandez, Austin Aguirre, Edna Escobedo, Anjali Singh, Angel Ramirez, Elijah Cross, Michelle Lopez, Alondra Campos, Sadie Cunningham, Joseph Arisco, Maya Souza, Efrain Flores, Kimberly Solano, and Zauriah Cotton. Love/Sick is a play that contains lovers and dreamers that look into the agony and the happiness that comes with being in love and in relationships. To begin with, the plot of the play was very straightforward and unmissable. It outlined all the effects, good and bad, that comes with being in a relationship as well as depicting all the dilemmas.…

When the girls ask for a chance to try out for the boys’ soccer team, the coach replies, “Girls aren 't as fast as boys or strong or as athletic. Girls can 't beat boys and it’s as simple as that”. When the coach is sharing his views with the female soccer team, some members of the male soccer team seem to disagree but they still nod along because they do not want to fit in with their team members. Also, when Viola asks Justin what he thinks about the girls trying out, he says, “I think the coach said it all”. The answer he gives is clearly so he would not get made fun of for picking the girls over his own teammates.…

For many decades the trope “like a girl” has been highly analyzed and debated. Starting in 1980 with political philosopher Iris Marion Young’s essay “Throwing Like a Girl” and most recently in the feminine care product company, Always’s “#LikeAGirl” campaign, which debuted during the 2015 Superbowl, this phrase’s origin, usage, and implications have been explored and argued. It is my goal to further unpack this trite expression by discrediting some of the theories proposed in the past as well as formulating my own based on my understanding of language and gender studies. To begin, the first question we must ask is what does it mean “to throw”? The Merriam-Webster dictionary first defines it as “to propel through the air by a forward motion…

Furthermore, the stereotypes were present in both Jules and Jess’s family despite their different beliefs and cultures. Jules’s mother also assumes that Jules is a lesbian only because she plays football, and has no interest in the stereotypical activities associated with women. To elaborate, it is a common stereotype that if a woman plays a sport, she is indulging in ‘masculine’ behaviour, and is likely to be homosexual. Racism is also prominent in the movie.…

It escalated to one of the boys jokingly threatening to throw water on me, even going as far as offering to pay any of the other boys present 15 dollars if they were brave enough to do it. While the playfulness of the players might be common when they enact their practice rituals, my presence only serves as an outlet for them to deviate from their norms. However, through this interaction, I was able to engage in more of a participant observation by joining in on their fun. Through this, I got a feel of the culture surrounding football and the fictive kinship ties that have been formed between the players.…

One theory to explain about the risk or promise of youth football is the Social Learning Theory. Sociologists have tried to understand why people do what they do and one theory to understand people’s thought process is the Social Learning Theory. Albert Bandura created the Social Learning Theory and the theory says “ people learn from one another, through observation, imitation, and modeling”(Bandura 1971). This theory will help explain why people have negative or positive attitudes towards youth football. The literature review will place emphasis on the parents, coaches and the athletes’ thoughts on the perception of the sport, and why they like it or not.…
