Beautiful Art
(Three messages from Musee des Beaux Arts) “A history of art begins to look a little more interesting where it claims that art has a symbolic value” (Potts). Throughout history there has been a number of very symbolic paintings and images created by many different artists. Whether it was pablo picasso or Leonardo da vinci or any artist there is a meaning behind most pieces they paint. W.H Auden loved to go to an art museum and study paintings try and figure out the meanings of them. Auden stumbled across a painting that caught his eye the painting of The Fall of Icarus. As Auden studied the painting he soon realized something. There was a person drowning on the very bottom right part of the painting. As the boy was drowning everyone was carrying on their day ignoring the boy as he is losing his life. In the poem, Musee des Beaux Arts, by Auden it states, “ While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along” (line 4). What Auden is saying is that people don’t care about anyone else except themselves. People all over will often ask others how they are doing. However, people don’t actually care, also the person isn’t going to tell them everything that is wrong with him or her they will simply say they are doing well. The world is full of selfish people that care nothing about anyone else. Chandler states, “When you respond to their selfish behavior with kindness, their brains immediately start planning how to best take advantage of you” (Chandler). People have gotten so used to being selfish these days that they will go as far as taking advantage of you. Not only do people not care about you but they are wanting to do whatever will help themselves out and no one else. Auden was right about people being selfish and how they need to change to make todays society

Art is gives its creator (or commissioner) an outlet to express their feelings or emotions. The message behind certain art pieces may be bold and obvious, others more downplayed and debatable. Different artworks can be used for different things, some may be used for the function of remembering and honoring a fallen hero, some may solemnly depict a period of darkness and sadness, others can be made purely for aesthetic purposes and to display the creator's style or craft. The different uses of pieces of art can say much about the culture, time period, and mindset of the creator, as art is a form of expression and people and their feelings are often influenced by their surroundings. The statue of Memi and Sabu, who are hypothesized to be a married couple as most statues depicting a man and woman together typically meant there was a marital relation between the two, shows a man and a woman with their arms around each other as they stand on a platform with hieroglyphics.…

Poem Analysis Question 1 The poem Musée des Beaux Arts (1940) by W.H. Auden is about the contrasting issues in people’s experience in daily life. In the story of A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man, several underlying motifs sometimes make up an almost subliminal, sometimes very obvious message of music, flight, and sin. These motifs are what I believe really make this story hard hitting and relatable for some of us. Music is apparent in how Stephen turns things into little songs like at the very beginning when Dante is threatening him. He repeats it in a quick cute little tune.…

“Musee des Beaux Arts” by W.H. Auden and the Painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus by Pieter Bruegel both speak about society. The author, W.H. Auden wrote about three characters that represent our society today. Bruegel painted people and symbols that also represent society. Both the poem and the painting are based on the myth about the fall of Icarus. The myth stated that Icarus, the son of Daedalus was made a pair of wings from wax.…

It sways and it comforts, it instills fear and it excites. No matter what art has been used in, one thing that is clear is that art was meant to send a message not just to people in the present, but to the children of the future. Whether it be political propaganda to give an idea of an ancient civilization’s culture or to show a fellow hunter how to ensnare an animal for food, art, whether it be through images or groups of symbols named words, was made to help man and civilization survive. Human beings cannot see into the future, it’s a thick black void that cannot be unveiled until it is already too late. The uncertainty is a great fear amongst many.…

Francis Bacon was correct in his statement “The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery. ” Art should deepen mystery by raising questions, challenging ideas, and including symbolism. The artist creates something in order to send a message. It is the job of the person on the receiving end to interpret that message, and then take it a step further and decide what they are going to do in reaction to their interpretation.…

The Icarus myth is a Greek mythological story about a father and son who tried to escape imprisonment by flying away with fake wings. The father, Daedalus, was “an Athenian craftsman, famous for his ability to invent and build things” (Shmoop Editorial Team). The beginning of the myth gives a backstory about how Daedalus got kicked out of the Athens, traveled to Crete, and ultimately ended up locked away in a tower with his only son Icarus. Towards the end of the story, Daedalus crafted two large pairs of wings out of feathers and candle wax. As he was placing the wings on his son, he gave Icarus some warnings: “flying too near the ocean would dampen the wings and make them too heavy to use.…

Everyone is looking after themselves so, why should I look after them? This is mentality of most people I know. We work for ourselves, we seek pleasure, we avoid pain, we try to take care of our family, sometimes our friends and it stops there. The barista at Starbucks would be lucky to see us crack a smile and would be bewildered if we genuinely ask her if she is having a good day and we actually listen to her response.…

Another aspect that Waterhouse depicts in The Awakening of Adonis is the image of two white little birds flying in mid air through a field of flowers popping from the grass, with figures of people . The figures of these birds are located on the right center portion of the canvas. One figure of the bird has it’s wings spread out vertically like it is hovering through a vast wind stream. While the other figure of the bird has its wings outstretched above it’s head further stretched than the other figure of the bird. The figures of the birds are white but not snow white…
