Beah's Journey Analysis

Next, during Beah's’ journey his brother will help him fight through the obstacles and give him motivation to survive. Beah is in a new village and an attack happens unexpectedly. He starts running away with a group which included Junior, Talloi, and Kalilou. Beah uses “we” which shows that he isn’t alone. He is part of group which allows him to commit to his survival because they are able to help each other. Their relationship will grow along the way. “Every few seconds my brother would call my name, to make sure I wasn’t behind”. This is really important because this is where they begin to get close. He lost his last family member but this won’t stop him from fighting. Now he only had Kaloko by him to help him out. “I thought about Junior, Gibrilla, Talloi, and Khalilou. Had they been able to escape the attack? I was losing everyone, my family, my friends.” This thought will commit him to his survival. He is determined to find the answer to these questions. He is determined that he will find them alive someday. He decided to leave Khalilou and went on days by himself. He walked alone and just imagine what was going through his mind. No one would have the strength to walk alone for days just to have the faith to find their family. He reminded himself of what his father told him, “If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen.” This helps him push forward. As long as he survives something good will happen. Along the way he finds six boys that he knows. They come along a old man that says that people ran away because of 7 boys which are them. When they get to village they are once again threatened but the rap music saves them. They move to another village again and that is where he begins to think about his family again. He says “My little brother who looked exactly like me and sometimes told people that his name was Ishmael. ” This shows that he misses his brother a lot because they were separated. This sadness leads to more strength of trying to find Junior which commits him even more. He also brought up one of his grandmother's story. This shows how family is important to him. Later on he said, “I was in disbelief that Saidu had actually left us”. Saidu died and Junior once again lost someone close but he kept fighting. He still wanted to risk it just to see his family. Then a woman out of nowhere in a new village says, “I know you”. Then she mentions that she saw his mother, father, and little brother. Beah can’t believe it. He doesn’t regret giving up.
