The excerpts from Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom by Amy Chua and The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan are perfect examples of the arguments that can happen between a mother and daughter. Eventually, she rebels and starts to disobey her mother and stops following her instruction as a way to protest her endless list of expectations. However, it is obvious that she still cares very much about what her mother thinks of her. This becomes obvious when she reveals what devastated her at the piano recital was her mother’s expression, which was a “quiet, blank look that said she had lost everything.” (Tan, 391). This demonstrates how much her mother’s emotions can influence her despite her determination to not be changed anymore.…

Tiger Mom: The Oppressive Matriarch In today’s cut-throat educational system the students are forced to be driven and the courses are demanding; there is no room for the weak, and those who are unable to perform amongst the top are left to fend for themselves. The unyielding desire for their children to succeed has caused parents to subject their children to very high academic standards. These overbearing parents expect their child to maintain a minimum of a 4.0 GPA and take four advanced placement (AP) classes, while immersed in extracurricular activities; they presume the only way their child will prosper is through extremely active engagement in his or her academics. While some define a “privileged education” to be the involvement of parents…

In “The Lady, or the Tiger”, the author’s use of conflict between the princess and herself shows that she actually loved him, and would not send her love to the death. In this quote we learn that the princess knows a key detail that the man does not, “ She knew in which of the two rooms, that lay behind those doors, stood the cage of the tiger, with its open front, and in which waited the lady.” The princess took the initiative to find out what was behind the door. If ‘fate’ was to decide, which they believed it did, she would have let him open the door with the tiger because he was guilty of the accused ‘crime’. However, she took the initiative to find out which of the doors held either to change his fate.…

The daughter is portrayed as timid, and consequently only speaks twice, in which she defends her innocence to her mother: “But I don’t sing benna on Sundays at all and never in Sunday school…” (Kincaid 483). The mother does not respond to the daughter adding to the dismissive characterization of the mother. The instructions the mother gives show the girl “how to perform and protect oneself from discrimination when she is under the proverbial watchful eye of this patriarchal community,” (Bailey 111).
