In the novel Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich, Barbara is an undercover journalist looking to write on how people in the lower class get by on minimum wage. She finds out through her journey, that most of them don’t. She has many different experiences, but she really evolves toward the end of her journey. She realises that the managers, and the bigger companies treat the employees like suspected criminals. I believe that this influences the employees morale negatively and therefore impacting their work negatively. Therefore these unnecessary procedures should be cut back on, because drug testing is inefficient and costly, and “time theft” is making the employees more stressed, and less productive.
First of all, Drug testing is the first thing that lowers a potential employee’s morale.

Time theft is described in Nickel and Dimed as “ Doing anything other working during company time, anything at all. Theft of our time is not, however,an issue.” (Ehrenreich 146) Not only employees are guilty for “time theft” companies and the management are guilty of it s well, but in a different sense. A company can commit time theft by not properly paying workers for the time that they have put into their work, although, employees that “ exhibit ” “ time theft” are the only ones punished. Companies should also actively be punished for time theft if they are going to crack down so harshly on the employees. The crackdown on time theft has also lowered the morale of the employees, because they can't even catch a bathroom break or get too long of a lunch. The crackdown also keeps the employees paranoid about going to do the littlest things. The companies and managers may believe that the crackdown makes the employees morale, and work quality increase, but many workers would disagree. If the employees are constantly making themselves look busy at the risk of their job, they won't do as quality of a
