Conflicts In Babylon Revisited By F. Scott Fitzgerald

Our future is created by those choices we have made in the past both good and bad. The novel “Babylon revisited” is a tale of a man Charles who is trying to reestablish a relationship with his daughter. This is complicated by his past of heavy drinking and wild partying. The time in which this novel is placed is also a factor on those characters in it, because this is a time of economic downturn following a time in which everything was going great economically. Having lived thru this time known as the great depression himself the writer of Babylon revisited is able to draw from the world that he lived in, and create non exaggerated landscape for the reader. Being able to establish a life with his daughter is Charles main goal, but is complicated by decisions made earlier in his life. Conflicts find many opportunities to thrust themselves into Charles life, and create a struggle for Charles that he must make it thru in order to be with his daughter. …show more content…
When it came to writing about the roaring twenties and the depression that followed he was indeed a subject matter expert. Fitzgerald was also a expert when it came to writing about falling short or being helpless as ones world falls apart. In another one of his novels Fitzgerald writes “The loneliest moment in someone’s life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly.” (The Great Gatsby). The same sentiment could be felt at the end of “Babylon Revisited” when Charles did not achieve his goal of being able to bring his daughter home right away. Although the main character Charles strives to earn redemption by trying to prove that no longer has an issue with drinking. So in the end Charles was in fact his own worse enemy, by living a wild life in his younger years he created conflicts that would follow him and haunt him for the rest of his
