Next Generation: The Benefits Of Cooperative Learning

Improved Essays
Next Generation is the institution is which I choose to do my field experience hours. It is an after school program where children from middle school through high school are able to go and do homework and after school activities in a safe and enriching place. I enjoyed getting to know all of the children there and was able to get to know a lot of them on a personal level. I gave them advice on how to apply to school and get scholarships. The younger ones in middle school always enjoyed playing soccer or keep away with me while they were waiting on their parents to pick them up. The experience I had at Next Generation was incredible and I hope that if I have the opportunity, I will be able to work in a program very similar later in the future. …show more content…
Lecture classes are good for some lessons that need a lot of information and facts facilitated, but for lessons that can incorporate other people, cooperative learning strategies should be taken advantage of. Group discussions, debates, small group work, and students teaching the class are different ways that cooperative learning can be achieved. These students at Next Generation do best when it comes to cooperative learning versus direct instruction. They use their peers to bounce ideas off of and find helpful ways to explain a lesson to someone who might not understand it so well. Using this style of teaching will help students learn to work with other people, communicate better, and sympathize with others. They listen to their peers and understand different people’s lives and their own outlook. Understanding that your own opinion is not the only one and certainly not always the right one is a major lesson that all children must learn. While some learn this at a very young age, other children just realize this as they go through middle school, high school, and maybe even college. This understanding of other people and their own outlook on life is essential to them become more accepting and tolerant towards all people of all cultures, genders, social economic statues, race, ethnicity, and even …show more content…
Not every teach will stay in a school system all of her life and it is nice to know of different possibilities we, as teachers, have. Knowing the difference I could make for an older child that is not in the best family situation could mean more to me than anything else I could do. Setting these children on the right path and encouraging them to accomplish anything in the world might be what they need to hear to be successful. I admire the women who work with these children every day and how they inspire them to become better than they are. The different strategies and methods the teachers use fit how the students learn best and they will modify them at any time to accommodate everyone. I hope to go through training programs and learn how to sympathize with children who are in situations I have nerve been in and the best way I can encourage them to keep

This in turn allows for students to have a better viewpoint on their peers. These cooperative learning strategies also make students rely on one another in order to improve each other’s learning. It is important to make sure that these strategies are used frequently in the student’s classes to help build peer relationships. It is also important to make sure that these strategies are not only about academics. They should also be used as team building opportunities, one way I do this is by having the students do a think pair share about what they are going to do over the weekend, or I have them create a list of their favorite food through a rally write where they take turns writing their favorite…

and Dona Rinaldi, “there are five key components required for cooperative learning to be successful: face to face interaction, individual and group accountability, interpersonal and small group skills, positive interdependence, and group processing” (Hanson and Carpenter, 2011, p. 270). Absolutely, students have to communicate each other face to face so that they will decide about the topic. Students also need face to face communicates with their faculty because might be they do not comfortable with the topic. I grew up in an upper-middle class, white, Catholic family, in the middle of suburban Cary, North Carolina. Culture was a term introduced in school with pictures of exotic places and bright wardrobes; history lived inside textbooks with stories of war and migration. My fourth grade family history project contained one piece of information: my great-grandmother sailed to the States from Italy in 1904. The little history and culture introduced by my family showed me who I do not want to become. While the teachings of Christianity shaped me into a compassionate, open-hearted person, I struggle to accept the dogma that followed it.…

Countless controversy over ability grouping has been around in communities all over the world, for over the three decades. Especially, there has been a serious issues involving segregation and inequity with the mask of ability grouping on the surface in the United States, such as race and social status. In the news article, “Sorting kids at school: the return of ability grouping,” the reporter Celia R. 1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…

Teaching controversial issues in the classroom through discussion is the most beneficial method for students to learn about these matters because it teaches them how to be open-minded, think critically about their own beliefs, and forces them to master their public speaking and interpersonal skills. The benefits of using discussions in classrooms to teach contentious topics are endless but the three previously mentioned have proven to be the most valuable by students, teachers, and parents everywhere. Class discussions force students to listen, embrace, and be respectful of opinions and beliefs that are divergent to their own. As mentioned by David Bridges (1979), an author who has formerly analyzed the notion of discussion, the sharing of…

I traveled throughout Thailand and Bali, becoming inspired by yoga and the art of meditation. Returning home I engulfed myself in a demanding spiritual and physical training course, earning my certificate as a Registered Yoga Teacher. Then moved to St. John, VI; four thousand miles from the support system at home, into a culture entirely new to myself. There I forged a new network of friends, built a new home, and truly learned that I am capable of taking any challenges life throws at me and conquering…
