There used to be different terms for the levels of Autism that one would exhibit when trying to diagnose a person. These levels included severe Autism and down to Asperger’s which explained those with a slight Autism or those who were seen as slightly socially awkward or displayed some type of behavioral issue in the way of repetition or a behavior that burdens a person’s life. This term was also used to explain those that performed under expectancy in learning or social environments. Instead of having the numerous amounts of terms for different levels of this disorder the American Psychology Association decided to make create Autism Spectrum Disorder in which an individual can be placed on the spectrum as needed by the clinician. This spectrum ranges from mild Autism which covers Asperger’s to severe Autism. This spectrum makes it much easier and much more accurate in the way of diagnosing patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This change was made in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (fifth edition) or DSM-5. The first being in infancy, parents have seen that their children have been not as developed as they hoped socially in this stage. This may sound absurd to some but this is a real life fear for parents when raising children. The other method being the onset of this disorder being in the first three years of life. This is shown more predominantly and can be diagnosed easier by a clinician. Overall these two ages of onset are still treatable with consistent treatment. The most important fact to know about treating Autism Spectrum Disorder is that the earlier a clinician catches this disorder, the better it will be for the person with the disorder. Autism Spectrum disorder being a neurodevelopmental disorder is one that will get worse over time because of the halting of brain regions and impairment of brain functions for these individuals.
