Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi is the daughter of Aung San, who was Burma’s national hero that negotiated for Burma’s freedom after helping the British defeat the Japanese during World War II, while her mother, Daw Khin Kyi, was a Burmese diplomat. Born in Yangon, the largest city in Burma on June 19, 1945, Aung San Suu Kyi lost her father when she was 2 years old when a political rival assassinated him. Spiritual Leadership
Values that are found in religions make up a spiritual leader and a leader’s leadership style is always greatly influenced by it (Yukl, 2013). Being a Buddhist, its teachings have shaped her style in politics where she firmly stands by her values of protecting human rights and nonviolence (White, 1998). During her house arrest, Aung San Suu Kyi resorted to meditation, which she found difficult at first, but used it to control her thoughts and emotions (Hammer, 2012). She has shown Spiritual Leadership by committing to her values of non-violence during the fight for Burma.
