Anton Chekov’s "At Home,” is the story of Yevgeny Petrovich. He is both a public prosecutor and father. Shortly into the story, we learn that his son Seryozha was stealing tobacco from his desk and smoking it. This leaves Yevgeny to try and decide the best course of action to stop his son from smoking. The first tactic that he uses is to tell his son reasons why smoking is bad. He chooses to try logic and facts, but his son is just too young to comprehend and put this all together. “He obviously doesn’t consider either his misdemeanors or my arguments important. How can I make him understand?” (93)Later in the night, Seryozha decides that he wants his father to tell him a story. This is when

Crowley’s lecture is that a lot of the time it is easier to convey to somebody through storytelling. “Maybe it's very natural to communicate with stories with falsifications, though I do not necessarily mean that in a negative way.”(Crowley) An example that Dr. Crowley cites is the anti-smoking campaigns where they show very intense imagery to try and elicit an emotion from the audience. This way of portraying a specific belief or argument is especially effective for younger children who still have not fully developed the ability to think about things in a logical way. This relates to the short story, “At Home” because a father tries to logically explain why his seven-year-old son should not smoke. However, the son is not able to comprehend the message. This is when the father decides to turn to storytelling to try and convey his intended message to his son. To the Fathers surprise the son hears the story and promises that he will no longer smoke. As the story comes to a close the father starts to ponder why a story was better understood than facts. He thinks about the morality of lying to children in order to get them to understand what is best for them. Another question that arises from this point is when is lying to children okay and not. In my opinion, if it is in the best interests of the child to lie then it is okay to use stories to help prove a point to them. An example in modern day society is some of the many holiday traditions. Santa …show more content…

The Gun by Paul Langan was the first book I read alone back when I was in 7th grade. I was in my English class examining the shelf of books in the back of the room then a thought came to my head that I never read a book that I wasn’t force to read for homework or read over to prepare for a chapter quiz or test. So I asked my teacher if I could borrow the book for a few weeks which she allow. This book was my first that I didn’t have to stress over about reading 50 pages for the weekend or taking chapter notes to make sure I got and understood what I was reading. This was just for me, so I could take my time, come back to it at any time and I don’t have to rush through pages in order to fulfill an assignment.…

Ever since Medieval scholars began studying different civilizations centuries ago, culture has been considered an elusive and controversial concept—while some believe that culture is carried with us, like an invisible charm, others believe that it exists in the air around us, living in the things we say and the foods we eat and the traditions we pass down to our children. Some even believe that it doesn’t exist at all, or that it has all melted together into one incomprehensible mass of beliefs and values shared among all of us. Anthropology exists to study and explain how and why culture exists. Additionally, it helps to explain how humankind has created cultures which are so diverse and rich in tradition, and yet still somehow are strikingly…
