Erin Riley in her article express how vocal fry is just another excuse to not listen to women, “Vocal fry is not a problem. It is merely another excuse to dismiss, ignore and marginalize women’s voices, both literally and figuratively” (Riley). I agree that vocal fry is not the problem. I have never heard of the term vocal fry before and I had no idea what it even sounded like. In fact, I don’t notice something as minor as vocal fry until it is pointed out to me. It seems that the second that a minor problem is pointed out then it becomes a problem to which someone has difficulty ignoring. However, in the case of women’s voices, women are judged harsher for it, and women are even rejected. There has been all different types of speech throughout history, speech is always evolving. Though women have always been subject to disapproval, “before vocal fry, there were complaints about overuse of the word ‘like’. Before that, there was upspeak. Even the mere sound of women’s voices is used as an excuse to dismiss women” (Riley). Women have always been criticized for their voices, there seems to be no middle ground. For example, even Hillary Clinton has been criticized for her voice. Women are judged too harshly by society for their voice, whereas men are hardly judged for their voice. A woman should not be afraid to speak or to change her way of speaking to appeal to certain people. Many women cannot choose how their voice is and should not be penalized for it, nor should a woman be ignored because she is a woman.
