Antigone is set in a disaster prone city state called Thebes. Most Greek plays were from Athens thus their plays were hardly set there. The play takes place in Thebes. It starts at dawn following the night of Polyneices and Eteocles. They fight for the throne held by Oedipus. The atmosphere of Antigone expresses the fore boding and impending doom predominant. The play portrays the tense atmosphere which characters live in. The time of the day when the play takes place is dawn. The dominant colors are yellow, light blue and green. They make it easy to track the necessary themes throughout the play. The weather includes rain, snow and wind. Antigone is dressed in a wedding dress. The other characters are wearing deep reddish maroon dresses and costumes. This is because the issues of the play around the consequences of Creon’s decisions as they affect and destroy himself and his family. The conflict in Oedipus is internal. There are other conflicts expressed in the play. They include person vs. self, person vs. person and individual vs. society. The person vs. self conflict is identified in the play when Ismene decides not to help her sister yet claims responsibility afterwards. Individual vs. society conflict is expressed when Antigone fights the establishment in order to expose an unjust law. She also battles Creon who decrees Polyneices should be buried. She also battles the social norms and customs of the society which lead to the assumption that women are the weaker gender hence they don’t fit into politics. In scene one of the play, Creon claims the throne on the account of the death of Eteocles. The scene begins with political philosophy of Creon which does not complete loyalty from his subjects up to the time he is tested in office.
