Antigone Play Report

This Wednesday, October 14,2015 I went to see a play called Antigone. The play was directed by Ivo Van Hove ,and it was awfully different than what I was expecting. Antigone is basically a play about a girl named Antigone played by Juliette Binoche trying to bury her brother no matter what the cause ,and her experiences that she goes through to buy her brother. This lovely performance took place at the Power Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. There were many thing in the performance that were done very well but also there were many that I didn 't quite like. Now let 's get started on the details of the performance. The beautiful and bright setting of the performance was by far one of the best things of the performance. The set was a beautiful part of the performance because it had hidden secrets. When you look at the setting at first you will see basically a white blank wall in the background ,and in the front you will see a couch, a few desks ,Chairs ,and a couple of book shelves. But the part that 's …show more content…
The scene that made me believe that putting your family first is the last scene of the performance because that’s when Patrick O 'Kane -Who played Kreon- cried and felt like he lost his life ,and everything ,and that he doesn 't want to live anymore. All that sorrow ,and madness happened because he put the people first and not his family ,and I strongly believe that 's the big idea Van Hove wanted us to think of. This interpretation of Antigone didn 't really work for me because it used many modern words and I really don 't think it an exact interpretation because I don 't think people used to talk that way. It wasn 't effective because I think it made the performance feel like a comedy instead of a tragedy ,and the play was meant to be a tragedy not anything else. The big idea the author was trying to send us was put family first out of

As the curtains went up, the audience was present with a metal structure that was the bottom of the Eiffel tower. This beautiful metal structure made me only excited to see what the rest of the sets would look like. The lighting right off the bat was extremely elegant, being that the majority of the lights had a shade of purple. This set the feel of the Parisian world that the audience would be taken on. Before I saw the show, I imagined the stage being much bigger than it actually was in reality.…

At one point or another in one’s life we are shackled to something. That something may be a relationship, ourselves , or even power. Power is probably the one thing that us as humans think we will be forever in control of, but truthfully, we are never fully in control of situations or people and at any instant we can lose power to others. Just as Antigone from Antigone by Sophocles and Equality 7-2521 from Anthem by Ayn Rand struggles to defy power in order to regain it . Antigone was a level headed young woman who was born in a powerful family, but being a women made the power not as “accessible” to her.…

You might want to post this question in the discussion postings for this group to gain a wide range of responses. For me, this play is all about the conflict between our duties to the state of which we are a part and then our own personal duties and what happens when the two collide. Antigone is left between a rock and a hard place - if she is a loyal citizen, she betrays her family and sense of religion by not giving her brother the proper burial that he deserves, and yet if she follows her own conscience she is left as a traitor against the state, burying someone who rebelled against the rule of Creon. Creon and Antigone act as foils for each other throughout the play, as Creon seems to represent a system of rule that takes precedence over…

I think Antigone is the tragic hero in the play. The first flaw Antigone shows is selflessness. She wanted to be loyal to her brother. The second flaw is a reversal of fortune. Antigone and Ismene are the only ones left in her family.…

Justice is very important in society and there are many different things that go into the idea of justice. There isn’t one simple thing that makes justice work, it takes a variety of different concepts to not only form a system for justice, but put it into action. While there are many examples of societies where rules are established and behavior and judgements are measured against those rules, there is still injustice. We, as humanity, need to continue to be aware of this and work to make the world more just by being courageous in expressing our opinions. In the play, Antigone, the main character, Antigone, goes against the king’s judgement because her personal belief and love for her brother gave her courage to defy that ruling.…

Life is full of unexpected surprises and outcomes that we as humans cannot comprehend or control on many cases. Antigone is one of those great plays which portraits many life issues and situations that we see on our daily life. Although most will argue that Antigone is the true hero of the story I will be one of the few to say that Creon was the both hero and victim of this story and because of his pride, ego, and loyalty met his ultimate demise. Creon is a complex character that starts of the story as a strong ruler with harsh rules in order to put order in the city of Thebes after an invasion at the hands of Polynices.…

Despite its ancient origins, Sophocles’ play Antigone provides a case study through which to examine issues of politics, power, sovereignty, and justice. The final of Sophocles’ trilogy “Three Theban Plays,” the first record of Antigone is around 442 BCE, during the height of Athenian democracy. The play centers around Antigone’s decision to disobey her future father-in-law and king, Creon, in order to give her brother Polyneices, who is branded a traitor and is forbade a proper burial. One of Oedipus and Jocasta’s living two children, Antigone flaunts Creon’s laws and gives her brother a proper burial. Antigone expects to be put to death for her crime but instead Creon orders her to be shut in a cave, where she will live out her final days.…

Compliance vs. Rebellion: A Study of Justice and what it Means to be Just Antigone’s opposition of the law is a more just action than obedience towards it. This is seen through her dedication to maintain morality and willingness to challenge authority when it becomes negligent and tyrannical. Throughout the play, Antigone seeks to illustrate the righteousness in paying reverence to fallen loved ones despite their opposing political views. This is evident in her attempt to bury her fallen brother Polyenes in the face of the king’s orders to regard him as an enemy of the state and shall be left untouched.…

The focal point of Sophocles’ Antigone is the protagonist’s desire and search for justice. Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, is the play’s tragic heroine who fights against the evil Creon, the current King of Thebes. Her rebellion against the king was ignited by her thirst for justice, stopping at nearly nothing to combat the immoralities standing in her way. In her heart, the sacredness of family and honor is the pinnacle aspect of her life. These beliefs of hers create the source of conflict and drama found within the play, and eventually lead to her own death.…

Both one-act plays Antigone and Trifles are centralized by the themes of femininity and law vs. moral rights and beliefs. Antigone is a strong hard headed woman who stands up for what she believes is right, just as Mrs. Hale does in Trifles. The two woman protagonists share many character traits as they each overcome conflicts of male vs. female and law vs. moral rights and beliefs. Because Antigone was written in the ancient Greek era, I feel the influence it has on Susan Glaspell’s early 20th-century play, Trifles is more impactful than realized. The influence Antigone has on Trifles is shown through each play’s plot, characterization, shared theme, and symbolism.…
