“I will do anything to avoid boredom," writes Anne Carson in her introduction to “Short Talks," and that is what she definitely did in her essay (140). Carson’s “Short Talks” essay is about random topics, such as, “On the Rules of Perspective,” “On the Mona Lisa,” and “On Shelter,” and her brief thoughts on them (141,142,143). Depending on the reader’s definition of ’boredom ’the reader will either find her essay intriguing or absolutely appalling. Based on the reader’s impression while reading “Short Talks,” there are many strengths and weaknesses to Carson’s essay. If the reader does not enjoy thinking critically, he or she should not attempt to understand this essay.
