To My Dear And Loving Husband Essay

After reading Anne Bradstreet’s writing, you start to learn that she writes in such an up-front and undoubtedly honest way. Out of all of her pieces one sticks out to me the most and that is “To My Dear and Loving Husband”, it is an extremely short and sweet piece of work. Sweet is exactly the word that you would use to describe it, due to the fact that she is describing the compatibility between herself and her husband. Throughout the short poem you are thrown a love story towards you that was condensed into twelve lines. Reading this piece, the audience might be torn between a sappy love story or a writer who simply just likes to talk about herself.
“To My Dear and Loving Husband” is an affectionate tribute from Bradstreet to her husband, it is a poem that describes love we do not get today. The bond between her and her husband is unstoppable, unconditional, and they most certainly have undying love for each other. One of the things that caught me about this poem after reading for class is that not only are we listening to her love for him but we get to learn about his love for her also. Bradstreet spends most of the poem talking about how amazing her husband is. You can tell directly from the title; “dear” could possibly refer to the feelings that she has for her husband, meaning that he is very dear to her. “Loving” might

"Of ever two were one, then surely we" (1). This quotation is probably the most important in the entire poem due to the fact that Bradstreet is pointing out that she does not feel as though she is one individual person. After a couple of times of reading this poem I began to think that while writing this poem Anne Bradstreet wanted readers to use this piece as an example of how marriages should be. Maybe not though. She wanted to set us up with some expectations of true love, and I believe that is precisely what she

I enjoyed Anne's poem to her husband. It conveys such sweet and pure and simple love. In contrast to our day--a day when husbands and wives are encouraged to be assertive and scornful toward one another--it conveys a passion and intensity that is charming and endearing. Anne Bradstreet loved her husband and she was not afraid to tell the…

In the end it was quite clear that Anne Bradstreet’s poem was a way to cope with her loss. I was not the common thing to express this in a male dominated society. To speak out and express your thoughts was dangerous in 1666, however she did so anyways. This poem showed her fear, the way she copes by reminiscing, and finally finding hope by connecting to her Puritan faith.…

The narrator of the poem is a woman who is in love with the mysterious man. She refers to him as my love in line 23 of the poem, and mentions her heart has died a thousand little deaths in the wake of his shameless womanizing in line 8. She also clearly possesses the ability to control her behavior despite her emotional state. Throughout the poem there is a repetition of the phrase “Oh, I can” followed by behavior contradictory to her actual feelings. She states that she can smile, laugh, listen, and marvel at this man’s tales of bedroom conquests, yet it is clear his behavior does hurt her.…

Thomas Paine’s pamphlet, Common Sense, is a work that shows how many people felt during the late 1700’s. In this work, Paine advocates independence from Great Britain to the Thirteen Colonies. It was published anonymously during the beginning of the American Revolution, and instantly became a sensation among the colonists. Similarly, Anne Bradstreet’s poem, Here Follow Some Verses Upon the Burning of Our House, July 10, 1666, portrays major Puritan beliefs of the 1600’s. Anne Bradstreet’s poem exemplifies the Puritanical beliefs of simplicity, providential view of history, and the insignificance of worldly possessions.…

The farmer in the poem has a deep desire towards his ‘uncommunicative ' wife, "The soft young down of her; the brown, the brown of her - her eyes, her hair, her hair! ‘soft young ' indicates that the wife is of a young age and is more sensitive to the world of marriage, which can lead to depression and separating oneself from any contact with the outside world. It also indicates that the farmers ' bride is still a virgin. The repetition of ‘brown ' and ‘hair ' hints the obsessive nature the farmer has towards his wife. Her beauty is driving the farmer to insanity as he fixates on her beauty.…

Constantly cleaning everything in sight, and scrubbing your body clean till you start to bleed is a sign of a physiological disorder that can and should be diagnosed before it’s too late. People handle messes and disorganization in different ways, some could care less, and on the other hand, some get completely disoriented and have to clean everything in sight. Obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD is more than just cleaning; it has to do with your brain constantly performing acts unintentionally (Rathus, 2010). Obsessive-compulsive disorder can affect people’s attitudes in negative ways, like in the 1981 film Mommie Dearest, directed by Frank Perry, which accurately portrays how OCD can ruin a family and career. Mommie Dearest for the majority…

    Gwen Harwood Poem Analysis

The poets, Gwen Harwood, Geoff Goodfellow and Judith Wright, all explore the idea of “individuals and those they love” using imagery and form. Through female perspectives, each poet presents how loving another person can cause a conflict of interests, between wanting a fulfilling relationship and the inevitable pain and suffering that accompanies it. Imagery is used to illustrate how daily hardships can overpower an individual’s ability to love people close to them, resulting in conflicted emotions. In both In the Park and Suburban Sonnet, Harwood explores how women can lead mundane and unfulfilling lifestyles following motherhood. In In the Park, the woman loses passion and self-identity, as evidenced by her “out of date” clothing and an almost…

They each represent a love that is free and faithful. “To My Dear and Loving Husband” and “How Do I Love Thee” help each poet to reveal how deeply they each love their husbands in every way imaginable. Anne Bradstreet takes a lot of pride that no women could match up to the love she has for her husband. She describes this by saying, “If ever wife was happy in a man, Compare with me, ye women, if you can” (line 3-4). Through this Bradstreet shows her depth of love for her husband using many themes like passion.…
