Determination: The Master Key to Success “What struck me is that IQ was not the only difference between my best and my worst students.” This quotation comes from Angela Lee Duckworth’s TED talk: Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. In Ms. Duckworth’s presentation, she spoke about how, as a teacher, she noticed how many students with a lower IQ performed greater than the students who were presumed to be smarter by these standards of intelligence. Because of this, Duckworth became determined to understand the cause of this anomaly, and she proceeded to perform psychological studies around the United States to learn exactly what this mysterious variance consisted of. Through these numerous and extensive tests, she was able to determine that grit was the cause of better performance both inside and out of the classroom. In conjunction with these studies, a question is raised. What qualities of a gritty student are more likely to cause them to succeed more than a non-gritty student? Gritty students are more likely to succeed in college due to their perseverance, their passion and their courage. With the mention of perseverance, many images come to mind. Some of these images are personal experiences. Some of them are images of a celebrity, one who triumphed over the norm to achieve distinction. No matter the mental image that one comes up with, the definition of perseverance rings true. Perseverance is the act of following through with a task, no matter what obstacle one…
