She has try to reason her arguments using various symbols and signs. In the first stanza she has symbolically used the word “mountain path” to denote a treacherous road which women have to cross to find equality. Moreover, she also states that she has been burdened by the responsibilities of other women too. However she have been halted by a prejudice (patriarchal society) on the way.
First, she approached the prejudice in a subtle and quiet manner. But prejudice didn’t paid any heed to her appeal and acted as if he didn’t cared about her mission. Due to the apathy showed by the prejudice she was forced to resort to much more aggressive way. But sadly, it also didn’t work. After trying every hand, Gilman tried that last tactic which was left in her kitty, she kneeled down to her knees and asked him to have pity on her. But this too didn’t work. However in the middle of her helplessness, she got a sudden spurt of inspiration and prepared herself to carry on the journey as if the prejudice haven’t existed.
She learnt a major lesson that day. The women should ignore the prejudices portrayed by the society and should walk as if they didn’t care about it. Women should do what their heart says and should break the social evils to lead a carefree
