In Alone Together Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other by Shery Turkle, Turkle mentions the negative impacts the online world has. The online world has not only affected people from this generation, but young generation and future generation as well. Turkle states, “Today, children contend with parents who are physically close, tantalizingly so, but mentally elsewhere” (267). I agree with Turkle. Things are not how they used to be. Before, there was no online world, everything wasn’t involved with the online world. People physical interacted with others, rely on themselves for difficult task, and other things. The use of social media has been increasing every day. She states, “It is those on the phone who mark themselves as absent” (155). People even use their technological devices in places that people normally use to talk. She argues that people are now using their devices at their dinner tables, subways stops, and other many others places constantly just to look at their social media. Turkle is not the only one who has noticed this as well, Other people have noticed it too. Author Kardaras Nicholas has the same idea as Turkle. He believes that social media has negatively controlled people to look at their social media. People can’t live their life without looking at their social media. They can’t resist it. Nicholas from “Generation Z: Online and at Risk?” states “Apart from the addictive nature of our new digital way of connecting, it does not seem to satisfy our deep-seated need for true human contact. Instead, what it seems to have spawned is the illusion of social connection via a medium that has our dopamine receptors on perpetual high alert as we anticipate, like Pavlovian dogs, the next ‘ping’ that promises to of- for us the novelty and pleasure of a text, instant message, tweet, Facebook update or Instagram photograph” (1). Player’s will spend constant hours on their online gaming avoid their real-world issues. Social media has started to control people’s lifestyle.
