“All Summer in a Day” “They hated her pale snow face, her waiting silence, her thinness, and her possible future,”(Bradbury, 1954). In the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury it shows the life of a character named Margot. The children of Venus despised Margot, a nine-year old girl, because of her prior experience with the sun. They hated her so much to the point where they would constantly bully and harass her. Jealousy and hatred consumed the children of Venus who had to experience persistent rain during their life, only receiving one hour of sun when they were two years old. Whereas Margot, had been on Earth in Ohio since she was four years old, and still had memories of the sun. Adapting to Venus’s constant raining weather, she starts to miss the sun longing to get out of the underground facility and travel back to Earth. As a result of Margot's prior experiences the children of Venus develop jealousy leading to the isolation, depression and harassment of Margot.

The author sets a minor theme of depression by stating “When they sang songs about happiness and life and games her lips barely moved,” (Bradbury, 1954). Margot develops depression from her deficiency in vitamin D and can only true desire was to have the sun. As you can tell, she was deprived of happiness , it was nearly as if her soul was gone, and had been blown away on her flight to Venus. The author also illustrates her depression by declaring “She was a very frail girl who looked as if she had been lost in the rain for years and the rain had washed out the blue from her eyes and the red from her mouth,”. This shows how her depression affected her and how her life was negatively impacted by the loss of sun.
