All Quiet on the Western Front is packed with shocking and grotesque scenes that convey the reality of warfare. One of the most horrific collections of scenes is in chapter six. The chapter itself starts out with the chilling reminder that death is right around the corner, when the soldiers glance at the brand-new coffins stacked against an abandoned school house. The chapter continues to usher in a feeling of uncertainty when the men mention that the barrels of their guns are so worn out that their bullets tend to land within their own lines. To make matters worse, the men live with repulsive rats that they have named “corpse rats”.
