Analysis Of Alex Haley's Article 'Thank You'

Decent Essays
In the article, Thank you, Alex Haley was grateful to some people in his life that made a difference. As they were celebrating Thanksgiving, he was reflecting on Thanksgiving; at that moment, he remembered to appreciate some good people in his life; therefore, he wrote to them. He was thanking them for believing in him. While I was reading the article, it made me remember some special people in my life whom I am thankful to for what they did for me, like my manager Linda Cruz. She always advises me on what to do to become a good nurse, for example, going back to school to get my nursing degree. She also helps me out with school work. I vividly remembered a day she called me and told me not to give up in my studies because she believes in me

Alex Haley a white man whom after twenty years in the U.S. Coastal Guard was about to retire, entered the civilian writing career in New York City. There, Haley crafted his civilian writing career of “provocative material,” in which, proposed an article about the cult to the Reader’s Digest. Accordingly, this lead Haley to Harlem in meeting Minister Malcolm X with a clear objective— “…one that would balance what the Muslims said of themselves and what their attackers said about them” (383). Leading up to the fact that Haley startled Malcolm X, in his own automobile, by stating, “…if he would tell his life story for publication,” which Malcolm X replied two days later, “’I’ll agree’” (386).…

After a person has found their proper function, became morally strong and pure, and created a habit of being good, their quality of life will increase, leading to a strong sense of fulfillment and an overall better life. One way that this can be done, is to not set unrealistic standards for yourself. If you expect nothing but perfection, you will ultimately always feel as though you have fell short of your true goal. This emotion can lead to self deprecation, even when an actual achievement is made. This is shown in the following excerpt from Mary Lavin’s “Happiness” when Mother demeans herself because she was not perfect: Another time she'd dream she'd be a great singer.…

This was my twelfth and final night shift following Meagan at Rady Children’s Hospital. I was expecting the day after Thanksgiving to be really busy. To my surprise, it was the least busy night out of all the shifts I saw while I was at Rady’s. The census was at an all time low of 15. Due to the low census and recent holiday, all the nurses on the floor were calm and giddy.…

I believe the Friar’s quote illustrates the need for quintessential people to both foster and expand positive change. In this current era, people are opportunistic and only do behaviors that are selfless in nature for image. Still, to be despondent means that we have lost hope in one another and that we can longer find people of true virtue. Never fret though, for I know that there are those who seek to improve humanity without selfish intentions. For instance, my friend Jessenia, via a small action changed my view of what it meant to be truly compassionate for the least of our neighbors.…

Elie Wiesel, a man of many words, once said “Let us not forget, after all, that there is always a moment when the moral choice is made. Often because of one one story or one book or one person, we are able to make a different choice, a choice for humanity, for life.” Simple people which one passes carelessly everyday can change another's perspective on the way they view life forever. I have looked up to a lot of different people throughout my years, all being of great wealth and fame, but what I didn’t notice until recently was the one who had the greatest impact on my life was much closer to me than expected.
