there are many laws against the use of recreational drugs including marijuana, cocaine, prescription painkillers and many others. While none of these are found in the world state, there is a drug called soma taken almost mandatorily by much of the population. Soma is a muscle relaxer that creates a “holiday” for the user which is a sleep-like state in which the user experiences great happiness. The use of soma in the world state is very similar to the misuse of drugs in America. Though marriage and relationships are nonexistent in the world state, sex is not. In the novel sex is extremely prevalent with almost all of the population participating in these activities. While many would think so much sex would result in a very high amount of pregnancies this is not the case. Women of the world state wear a belt that holds contraceptives used to prevent pregnancy, this is almost the same as modern day birth control pills and serves the same purpose as condoms. This amount of sex in current day America would be perfectly normal. The only controversial issue that would arise if this sexual lifestyle was prevalent in todays society is the age at which sexual activity is acceptable.
