Alan Patton writes this story to bring people to action to fight against the Apartheid. When Johnny Day, a white boy, first started to climb the quarry an Indian Man tried to help him down and stop him from climbing higher on the quarry. This is unusual for people of different races to interact with each other during this period due to the Apartheid. Alan is trying to show how race doesn’t matter and make people think about how the Apartheid is not right and they should bring change to South Africa. When Johnny Day gets to the point of no return, Thomas Ndhlovu, a black male, climbs the quarry to help save him. Thomas doesn’t care about the boy’s race and the boy doesn’t care about Thomas’ race. In R. K. Narayan’s, “Like the Sun,” Narayan shows how a man, named Sekhar tries to change his life by setting out to tell the truth the whole day. Change isn’t always easy, sometimes change can be a struggle. Sekhar wanted to be more honest so he told the truth the whole day. It was hard for Sekhar to tell the truth and his want for change was a struggle. His first challenge was when he had to tell his wife that his cooking was horrible. He told his wife the truth about her cooking and how bad it was. It was hard for him to tell that to a person he loves. This shows that change can sometimes be hard and will take sacrifices. Another point in the story where Sekhar had to struggle with his change to tell the truth was when he was talking to another teacher about a guy that died. His colleagues talked about how he was a good man and Sekhar cut them off and said that he wasn’t a good man. This quote also demonstrates how change can be hard because it hard to talk about a person that just died in a bad way and disrespect the person that just died. The final part of the story that shows Sekhar struggle with change was when he told his boss about his singing skills. Later in the day after Sekhar told the truth about how bad his boss’ singing skills are, his boss called him and thanked him for telling him not to waste his money on singing lessons, but his boss also tells him that he needs to grade all 100 papers by
