Al Gore’s book Truth to Power explains a climate crisis. The author explains how one problem can affect another, thus causing a domino effect on different places of the world. He explains how a climatic problem can affect millions of people, livestock, and businesses. Al Gore really makes the reader think once he or she begins reading his book, it helps the reader to be more aware of the conditions around him or her, and understand that his or her choices can harm another without even knowing it. He states three resounding questions for the reader: Must we change? Can we change? Will we change? The questions mentioned by the author still haunts many today. When the heated atmosphere air meets with the water, it increases the water temperature. “More than 90 percent of all the heat energy trapped by man-made global warming pollution goes into the ocean… the buildup of ocean heat content has increased dramatically… in the past 25 years- and it is accelerating” (Gore 56). This increase in water temperature is not good for developing storms, for it can cause them to be worse than intended. “... when ocean-based storms cross warmer ocean waters, they pick up more convection energy. The storms get stronger and more destructive” (57). There have been ferocious storms caused by warmer climates, some have been so terrifying, they were named Superstorms. “Superstorm Sandy crossed areas of the Atlantic 9 degrees warmer than normal and became a monstrous storm” (Gore 64). In the book Truth to Power, a man named John Leonard Chan, now a Climate Reality Leader, share his experience while living in the Philippine during Super Typhoon Haiyan. He remembers when the typhoon first began, saying that the winds were so strong, it began to tear at his family’s single-story dwelling in Tacloban, which is a small city in the Philippine. By midmorning, the water began flooding throughout the house. The family tried staying as long as possible, but by the second day, they left their house and ventured out by foot. John shares what he saw that fateful day. “People were crying, people were screaming,” said Chan, now 22... “Nobody knew what to do.” It is tsunamis like these that tear apart lives, but it is also tsunamis like these that causes massive floods. “In a single year, Houston, Texas, was hit by two 1-in-500 year floods, and a 1-in-1000-year downpour” (Gore 76). Any area around the coast can get flooded, but nothing has been reported flooded worse than Miami Beach, Florida.
