For the sustainability of any business, the top management must continously understand its competitive environment. There are many ways for analyzing a business environment including SWOT, PESTEL and Porter’s five forces analysis. The latter is a simple tool but prime when it comes to gauging where power lies, it helps comprehend the current and future competitive position of a business.
Porters five forces takes into consideration five vital forces that determine the competitive power in a business situation. The five different forces are supplier power, buyer power, competitive rivalry, the threat of substitution and the threat of new entry.

The two main competitors of Sherwin Williams are Akzonobel(N.L) and PPG Industries(US). According to an article by Marketline(2013), Akzonobel receives up to 22% of its revenues from its eco premium products and is focusing on increasing this share to 30%. Competition is heightened within the market, as companies fight for a portion of this new direction in the market.
