Introduction

Acetone (dimethyl ketone, 2-propane, CH3COCH3), formulation weight 58,079, isthe simplest and the most important of the ketones. It is a colourless, mobile, flammableliquid with a mildly pungent and somewhat aromatic odour. It is miscible in all proportionswith water and with organic solvents such as ether, methanol, ethyl alcohol, and esters.Acetone is used as a solvent for cellulose acetate and nitrocellulose, as a carrier for acetyleneand as a raw material for the chemical synthesis of a wide range of products such as ketene, methyl methacrylate, bisphenol A, diacetone alcohol mesityl oxide, methyl isobutyl ketone, hexylene glycol ( 2-methyl-2, 4-pentanediol ), and isophorone.Acetone is often produced as a by-product in the production

Take the 1.74 kg/s to calculate the molar flow rate by dividing by the molar mass of 0.058 kg/mole to obtain 29.9 mol/s. Use the selectivity table to calculate the amount of DE and PY formed according to the three reactions taking place. Use the molar ratios of the three simultaneous reactions to calculate the molar and mass composition of IP and WA in stream 1. Use mass balancing to calculate the molar and mass composition of IP, AC, DE, PY, HY and WA in stream 2. Use the ratio of the molar flow rates to calculate he molar and mass component of the water in stream 3. Calculate the amount of HY and PY in stream 4 by doing a mass balance. An economical calculation was done to determine whether stream 4 should be sold to add to the profit, or be discarded as waste. Given that the calculations yielded an amount of -$0.278 it is clear that this stream should be treated as a waste stream as the costs of extracting the stream to sell it is too expensive and is non-profitable. Continue the mass balance to calculate the molar and mass components of the IP, AC, DE and WA in stream 5. The components in stream 5 are portioned between streams 6 and 7 according to Raoult’s law. Stream 7 is discarded as a waste stream and is therefore not used in gross profit calculations. Do a mass balance to determine ow stream 6 is portioned between stream 8 and

This lab is designed to find the mass of copper produced when excess aluminium is reacted with 2.00g of copper salt [Copper (II) chloride decahydrate]. This will be achieved by dissolving the given amount of copper salt in distilled water and then adding in the aluminium rod. The reaction will commence as copper will begin to form on the aluminium. Calculating the percent yield is commonly used in the atom economy of a chemical reaction, which is a measure of the initial substance which becomes the useful product(s). Reactions with low efficiency which generate a great amount of waste and produce a smaller amount of the product desired have low atom economies and therefore a lower percent yield.…

Discussions Bag A stimulates cell whose contents are hypotonic to its environment. The situation is because the concentration of the dissolved substances in the cell is less than the surrounding media. In this case, the cell contents contain 1% sucrose solution that is less concentrated than the 50% surrounding media. Therefore, a large concentration gradient develops between the two media. Consequently, because of the high concentration gradient, the bag loses water faster and this leads to its reduction in volume.…

Goals The goal of the lab was to investigate the properties and structure of an unidentified compound that was discovered in a local landfill. The group was called in to help determine the chemical and physical properties of the compound so we can let the people of the town know so it can be taken care of properly with or without further precautions to be taken. Another goal of this project was to devise the synthesis of the unknown compound. Experimental Design In order to determine the correct identity of our unknown compound, we first started with a couple preliminary tests, which include physical state and smell.…

After starting with 30 mL of an unknown mixture of two solvents, fractional distillation and gas chromatography were used to identify the unknowns as acetone and toluene in a 1 to 2.04 ratio of acetone to toluene. Fractional distillation was first used to separate the unknown mixture into its components based on boiling point. Distillation refers to the method of separating components of a mixture through heating and cooling. Simple distillation, which is especially useful in the separation of less-volatile substances from volatile substances, such as sugar from water, can be used to separate a liquid-liquid mixture if the boiling points of the component liquids differ by more than 40-50°C. A plot of temperature versus volume for a simple…

Daniel Bernoulli, born February 8th, 1700, is the most acclaimed member of the Swiss family of mathematicians known as the Bernoulli family. Not only was he a mathematician (among many other things), but also a physicist who made monumental discoveries in hydrodynamics. Bernoulli is best known for his published book, the “Hydrodynamica”, in which he discussed the relationship and properties of basic fluid flow we which know today as “Bernoulli’s Principle” (The Doc). Though many are informed on the basis of Bernoulli’s Principle, how many of us can say we are familiar with the math behind this theory?…
