Abraham Lincoln is well known for ending slavery. He is still considered as one of America’s Heroes, the sixteenth president was born in Hardin, Kentucky in 1809. Due to land dispute, him and his family were forced to move to Perry County, Indiana in 1817. The movie “Abe in Illinois” is a historically accurate film, it’s a film that’s based on the early life of Lincoln from his days in Illinois, when he was a young man, to his election of the presidency. During this time in 1831 the transportation revolution was starting, states were starting to build railroads. Average Americans were starting to be brought into the market economy. People searched for new ways to transport people and goods across the United States at a faster pace and lower price. In the beginning of the movie when Abe and two of his friends were taking the load of pigs to New Orleans they are seen on a flatboat. This shows that at this time the steam engine was not a popular mode of transportation, meaning that only the wealthy had access to the steamboat. In New Salem, the buildings that are shown, such as the tavern are made of wood, and there are dirt roads that are bumpy and uneven. The director John Cromwell uses these details in the scenes to portray the transportation revolution. In this period only big cities were starting to build roads hence, the small town having uneven roads. At the end of the movie it is 1860 Abraham won the election for presidency. Before Lincoln arrives at the railroad station to bid his friends goodbye, his family and he are shown on a horse drawn carriage before they board a train to Washington DC. This is very significant because it demonstrates to us that the railroads were now built and were a popular mode for transportation and driving a car was far beyond imagination. American views on slavery during this time were confusing, many people believed that slavery should be abolished while others whom were mostly slave owners opposed this thought. The two views on slavery can be seen in the debate scene because Stephan Douglas is for slavery while Abraham Lincoln is opposed to slavery. There is a scene in the film where political leaders are gathered in Abraham Lincoln’s home and they slightly discuss the issue of slavery and if it is good or not. This particular scene is there to emphasize that slavery was an important topic of discussion between politicians and political parties.
