Pelayo and Elisenda being the first characters to make assumptions after hearing him speak for the first time. They “intelligently concluded that he was a lonely castaway from some foreign ship wrecked by the storm” because they thought he had “an incomprehensible dialect with a strong sailor’s voice.” Only a few scenes later in the story, Father Gonzaga makes an assumption about the old man with wings based on the way he speaks as well. He decided to speak to the angel in Latin, what he assumed to be the language of God.
