In Thomas Scarseth's excerpt, "A Teachable Good Book: Of Mice and Men", there is an emphasis on many different claims that "Of Mice and Men" is a tragedy and a book worth reading. People believe that Of Mice and Men isn't considered a good book to read because of the depressing ending, Scarseth thinks differently. Throughout the excerpt there are many different viewpoints represented that depict why Of Mice and Men teaches readers good lessons and why it is considered a tragedy. "A Teachable Good Book: Of Mice and Men" quotes that "the grossness is a way of presenting briefly the complex turmoil life." (Scarseth 5). A prime example of this quote portrays many different events that occurred in the book Of Mice and Men. Racial injustice is a problem in the book and continues to be a problem today. In Of Mice and Men, Crooks is discriminated against and treated differently than most characters due to his race. He is forced to live in different areas far away from others and is often taken advantage of. For example, the author describes Crooks’ segregation from others it says, “Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black. They say I stink.” (OMAM chapter 4). In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck used the relationship between George and Lennie to demonstrate their aesthetic sense of admiring beauty. Lennie depicted his admiration of beauty by getting a hold of things he considers beautiful, and unintentionally harms them. For example, Lennie pets Curley's wife's beautiful hair and this causes her to panic. Lennie freaks out from her quick movements, and ends up killing her. This incident is similar to the time when Lennie killed a puppy and mice that he admired. I agree with Steinbeck using the admiration of beauty in his writing because it gives the readers a different perspective on life and teaches valuable, hidden life lessons. Steinbeck is trying to get the point across that sometimes in life we are blinded by only seeing beautiful things and not focusing on the big picture. Steinbeck uses the admiration of beauty to show readers that admiring things you find beautiful can distract from the pain that life can bring at
