A Red, Red Nose Poem Analysis

What is a poem? Poem expresses feelings, tells a story, or states a passage. In different phases of history, different forms and types of poems arises because of the environment. Ushering the Age of Enlightenment which people has discarded religious faith as the way they view the world, more and more art works focuses on common, daily, and relatable topics instead of the formal ones. Nowadays, scholars name this period as the Romantic Movement. In poetry, poets at this time emphasizes their emotional experiences and apply a great amount of luscious and vivacious imagery and symbolism. In the romantic ballad “A Red, Red Nose”, Robert Burns writes to his lover and tells her his love using charming and enchanting words, however, Burns did not restrict this poem into a personal letter. Pulling himself close to the readers, the author utilizes the variety of techniques to incarnate and reveal his emotion immediately, which substitutes the readers into the poem as his lover.

He relies highly on the hyperbole, which demonstrates his love in a vivacious way, and these hyperboles plays the role somehow similar to metaphors and simile, comparing his love to the fantastic events. For instance, line seven and eight states that “And I will luve thee still, my dear, /Till a’ the seas gang dry.” Undoubtedly, the time for a sea to dry takes far longer than a human’s life, so Burns cannot love his lover until the seas go dry. By analogy, Burns tells his lover that his love never fails. Moreover, Burns used another sprightly analogy: “And I will come again, my Luve, /Though it were ten thousand mile.” This clearly shows the determination of Burns to overcome the obstacles and come to his lover, and with plenty of hyperboles, readers recognizes his inward emotion that how deep he loves that girl.
