After reading the first two chapters of the story, I foresee that his life will consist of a lot of regret, hardships and pain. I don’t think he really knows what he’s getting himself into, and it's gonna blow up right in his face. In the text it states “There was going to be a shooting war. They were having town meetings and nailing up posters all over Minnesota and the excitement was so high Charley has seen girls faint at the meetings, just faint from the noise and hullabaloo.” (1) That is what Charley thought a war was like, he thought it was exhilarating and fun. That being said I think he will heavily regret his decision to enlist, based on the danger and how long the shooting war actually lasts. In the book it said “it would be a month or two, no longer” (6). The Civil War lasted 4 years, (referred to in the book as the shooting war). So clearly whoever came up with one to two months, was way off. To add, I think Charley will survive, but he will come back changed. He won’t be damaged because he has a “soldier's heart,” but something about the person he is had to have changed. I think he will come home and be more matured and disciplined, but I also think he will never leave his family's side again due to what he has seen and felt. In addition, I do not believe he will run away because he was so determined to go in the beginning. Also because once he realises how bad it actually is out there he’ll want to stay and finish
