In the first stanza of Poe’s poem, “A Haunted Palace”, the description of the palace is very lovely and beautiful. The descriptions of the palace lead to the image of a head. Two windows, a door of ruby and pearl, golden tufts on top, and is ruled over by a thought symbolizes one’s head. The windows represent eyes, the rubies and pearls are the mouth, golden tufts are hair, and ruled by thought means thinking, the brain. “Through which came flowing, flowing, flowing, / And sparkling evermore,” (IV. 27-28). Usage of alliteration here gives the words are flowing out like a river stating the fluency of the head’s words. “In voices of surpassing beauty, / The wit and wisdom of their king.” (IV.31-32). The symbolic representation here is of a human being. The “echoes” are the words escaping the mouth (doors). It is also said that the only way one can know what’s going on in one’s head is through the “windows” of the eyes and the “door” of the mouth.
