The book “A Child Called “It” was based on the author, Dave Pelzer’s abusive childhood. Dave Pelzer uses description, reflection and imagery to demonstrate to the audience what he went through and the courage he was able to possess as a child. The book shares his experience. His experience involved an insane alcoholic mother who treated her child as if he was non-human. She deliberately and intentionally tortures her child. She does not even consider Dave to be her child. Dave’s mother has the characteristics of someone who would be charged with attempted murder. Dave lived in a world where he cried out for help. Experts say in A Kansas City Star’s article called “It Isn’t Rare for Parents to Single out One Child for Abuse”, that there are many reasons why an abusive parent might target one child and that this situation is not uncommon (Bergen, 2012). I found this statement surprising. I had no idea that there were various reasons why some abusive parents choose one child to abuse from many siblings. I was under the impression that there could only be one underlying psychological problem. Studies say that many of the reasons for parents singling out children for abuse include having a child that is difficult to manage, having a child that has physical and medical needs, and or having a child that represents something negative to the parent (Bergen, 2012). I am appalled by this type of abuse. Not that any other abuse case is any better, but singling out a child is heartbreaking. I can only imagine how that child feels and how the siblings feel for not being able to do anything and being separated from their siblings. Through research and articles I was able to better understand the topic and see the relationship between various cases that were similar to Dave’s.
