On September 11, 2001, two hijacked planes flew into the twin towers about 20 minutes apart from each other. The first plane hit the North tower at 8:46 am; while the second plane hit the South plane at 9:02 am. These events caused many lives to be lost and many more to be injured. The intense blasts caused two of the tallests buildings, who were said to not fall, to collapse. Although this was a truly horrific event, it could have been even worse if it wasn’t for strangers, firefighters, policemen, and more. All these people that were there to help that day and the weeks after were doing altruistic acts. 9/11 was a very horrific day that although many lives were lost, so many more could have …show more content…
This is a person’s instinct. Because of instinct, many people’s lives are saved; especially on September 11th. In the book, 102 Minutes, Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn write, “‘Get away from the windows,’... ‘get away. Stay calm. Go to the stairs.’... A new element was shaping the day; not ritual, not shock, but instructions (Dwyer and Flynn, 23). In 102 Minutes, the authors describe what exactly happened that day and what might have caused things to become drastically worse. The quote is from a boss named Eric Eisenberg who worked for Aon in the north tower. Without any training on what to do in this scenario, Eisenberg took charge and demanded everyone out of the building; thanks to him, his employees got a fair chance to live. Others who did just the same were the people on United Flight 93. They took over the plane from the terrorists and redirected the plane to go into an empty field in Pennsylvania instead of hitting the White House or the Capitol building. In addition to saving hundreds of more lives, the flight attendant called and gave valuable information about what was going on on the plane and who was involved in the hijack. With this information, the FBI had identified the men involved even before the plane crashed in the field (Szoldra). All three of these events had people saving strangers lives just because that’s what their …show more content…
People do acts out of logic everyday: How come people eat food? How come people put water in water bottles? Most people would respond to those questions by saying “ Because you just do...” People have been adapting and growing their logic since they were little, it’s how people survive “in the real world”. On 9/11, the people in the building had to use logic to also save their lives. Although some survived because of their logic others didn’t. People in the higher floors of the towers went to the roof because it was a shorter path, smoke was in the stairs, and that’s what people did during the 1993 bombing. This was a very good plan; however, planes couldn’t get to the top and the doors to the roof were locked. Their logic would have saved them if only the other circumstances were different. (Dwyer and Flynn, Find page). Others on the ground came to help the people in the buildings instead of running away. Two former Marines drove to the scene and helped. This was an act of logic because they have been through events similar to this event and could use their knowledge to help (Szoldra). On the other hand, people who didn’t know what to do and how to help would only be pillars; it was actually helpful for their logic to move them away. They could save their own lives. At the pentagon, a tour guide with a medical background, trained EMT, ran into the building to save people and then would
