During Dr. Magee lecture on “Listening for Personal & Professional Success”, Dr. Magee offered advice that is fundamental to the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” From reading the book “The 7 habits of highly effective people” by Stephen R. Covey, the author illustrates aspects of a successful person. The seven habits refer to the attributions and perspectives highly effective people have, such as: being proactive, beginning with the end in mind, putting first things first, thinking win-win, seeking first to understand, than to be understood, synergy, and sharpening the saw. Through examining our character, we can decide our life’s perspective, and control our effectiveness. Having a dynamic mindset offers a positive aspect of situations that can harness your focus to being an optimistic and effective individual. Through developing listening skills, such as paraphrasing, repeating, probing, clarifying, and remembering will assist in having a proactive mindset. Habit 2: “Begin with the End in Mind”, emphasizes having an end goal to everything you are involved in. Dr. Magee’s “Listening” presentation, the commercial of the frustrated car owner, displayed the lack of having the “End in mind.” If the car owner were to have researched the car, then he wouldn’t have been left with an useless vehicle. Habit 3: “Put first things first”, is the initiative to accomplishing your goals. In order accomplish them, you have to actually execute them. Through learning by listening to other’s advice, you can paraphrase the message and remember the significant points for future application. Habit 4: “Think Win-Win”, emphasizes the importance in developing win-win situations to accomplish interdependent relationships.
