3-Day Dietary Analysis: Calorie King

Improved Essays
For my 3-day dietary analysis, I used an app on my iPhone called “Calorie King.” This app allows you to record daily food and water intake and amount of exercise. In analyzing the diet that I have from day to day, I learned that I do not have an adequate carbohydrate or calorie intake from my food. I believe these inadequacies in my calorie and carb intake is due to the fact that I have been on a low carb and high protein diet for a few months and I have fallen in to the habit of eating mainly animal protein and vegetables. While this has worked in helping me to lose weight, it seems that it does not provide the amount of nutrients, carbohydrates specifically, to meet the recommended daily amount. On average, I ate about 47g of carbs per day …show more content…
When getting started with the app, you input your weight, height, and age and the app puts all of these together and provides you with their recommended healthy weight as well as their recommended amount of daily calories. You can go in and manually change these amounts if desired and set your goal weight to whatever amount you would like. The goal weight they provided me with was 154, which was exactly right as my goal is to be anywhere from 150-160, but the amount of calories was around 2,000, so I decided to change it to 1,500 as this has been what I have been following for the majority of the time I have been on a diet. After you set your amounts they show you a screen where you can search and choose different foods to input for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. One thing I enjoyed about this app is that while they allow you to search single foods such as a cup of spinach or an egg, they also have all the major fast food and restaurant nutritional information available so you can still record what you eat if you decide to eat …show more content…
It is simple enough so that the user does not get overwhelmed by all the different components, but is helpful in that it has so many different categories you can use to monitor yourself from day to day. One of my favorite aspects of the program was that you can search through past meals and copy and paste them to the current day’s log. This helped me a lot as I have the exact same breakfast every day, and this feature allowed me to simply paste it to the current day rather than having to input each individual ingredient every day. The app provides so many different aspects of the food that you eat and allows the user to monitor their intake extremely carefully. This app would be perfect for those on a low-sodium heart healthy diet or a low-sugar diabetic diet as it shows the exact percentage of your daily intake based off the requirements that you set. The only suggestion that I would have to improve the app is a more updated database of the fast food and restaurant info as I found it could prove difficult at times to find exactly what I was looking

For the Calorie Intake Project, I was very surprised for my overall calories consumption for each day. After determining my height and weight I was giving a total of 2,381 calories that I may consume each day to maintain a balanced diet. Even though I was under that number there is still room for improvement such as drinking more water and reading the nutritional label to be more inform of what I am eating each day. Before this assignment, I always thought that I was eating beyond what was consider healthy but it turns out that…

For the most part I had no real fruits or vegetables, the only consumption of those food groups came as a topping on my burger or other main entrees.…

After completing the three-day food log for my project, I realized that keeping track of food that I consume daily is very beneficial in identifying habitual eating patterns. I was amazed to find out that I was not choosing healthier foods as well as not enough calories in my diet. The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) committee has set an equation to calculate Estimated Energy Requirements (EER) based on gender, age, physical activity, and body size and weight (Sizer, Whitney, & Piche, 2012, p. 372). EER estimates the energy needed to meet the daily requirement to improve health. My daily activity places me in the "low active" category, which means my physical activity factor (PA factor) is 1.12 (Sizer et al., 2012, p. 373).…

After reviewing my past analysis, there was one major principle that has overlapped several times and is designed to fit the guidelines and key recommendations (RDA & AI) set by the Food and Nutrition Board, i.e. the healthy eating patterns suggested by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA).
