Shows and movies with an expected audience of teenagers tend to have some form of bullying introduced in the story. There are a wide range of shows in which bullying is shown resulting in a wide range of the forms of bullying, as well. 13 Reasons Why and Dear Evan Hansen are two shows that have fairly differing forms put in the spotlight. Analyzing these differences is key to understanding how Hannah Baker from 13 Reasons Why and Evan Hansen from Dear Evan Hansen differ in how they deal with bullying and suicide and what kind of an effect can that kind of directing has on their audience and industry. 13 Reasons Why consists of bullying in nearly every episode of the show, each form different than the last, ranging from slight to extreme bullying. Whether it is glamorized or proven unjust, suicide is a touchy subject and young audiences have no choice but to be familiar with all kinds of causes and effects. In the show 13 Reasons Why and the musical Dear Evan Hansen, suicide is both mildly and boldly presented as a major theme. The show 13 Reasons Why is all about Hannah Baker’s suicide. In the show, Hannah cuts her wrists and bleeds out in the bathtub of her home, leaving a trail of tapes telling her fellow classmates and one teacher what they did that drove her to hurt herself. Hannah chooses to cut her wrists in order to commit suicide, one of the more commonly known methods of self harm. Hannah chooses to end her life in the bathtub of her own home, knowing that she will be found.
