Personal Narrative: My Favorite Molecule

Superior Essays
My Favorite Molecule It is interesting to think how the human race is so dependent on today’s technology. Many of the machines that we use function with combustion. Combustion is key to the success and growth of our development. On the other hand, that same concept that builds us can also kill us. Even worse, it is nearly undetectable! As hazardous as it is to people, it’s just as hazardous to the environment. Carbon monoxide is to blame for being such a nuisance, but that’s what makes it so interesting! Carbon monoxide’s molecular formula consists of a single carbon atom bonded to a single oxygen atom. The bond that is shared between the atoms is triple bonded. This indicates an extremely strong bond within the molecule. Carbon monoxide’s …show more content…
Carbon monoxide is one of the major greenhouse gases. That means that it has the ability to absorb heat and trap it. Since carbon monoxide is lighter than air, it sticks around in the atmosphere. If it is absorbing heat, it will eventually make the Earth warmer, causing a greenhouse effect. Although not a major contender compared to all the other greenhouse gases, its presence still makes a difference. “Carbon monoxide readily reacts with the hydroxyl radical (OH) forming a much stronger, greenhouse gas--carbon dioxide. This, in turn, increases concentrations of methane, another strong greenhouse gas, because the most common way methane is removed from the atmosphere is when it reacts with OH” (ESSEA, 2010). A major contributor to this environmental detriment is our use of transportation. There are millions of cars all over the world producing a high amount of carbon monoxide. You can imagine that in higher density cities like those in California or New York the carbon monoxide levels are much higher. That, in return, increases pollution in the air and increases the greenhouse effect for that area. To combat this is to join in a worldly effort on creating more eco-friendly means of transportation. For now, some solutions could be to carpool or to invest in a more environmentally friendly

Carbon dioxide emissions continues to be a relevant controversial issue in today’s society. this statement is used so many times and heard over almost everywhere media. However, it is one of the causes of the environmental destruction. Garbage and pollution are the other two major with many minor aspects that all lead to only to one final resolution: desolation of ecosystems and destruction of living conditions for us. With all of that trash and pollution in the world, it is one of the leading effects of methane gas making it into our ozone layer and heating the atmosphere that leads to the degradation of our natural living…

This is a dangerous, naturally occurring compound that has deadly effects on the human body, especially the respiratory system. Carbon monoxide is one of the deadliest poisons as it is odorless, colorless, and tasteless, and as such, it is very difficult to detect and becomes easy to become overexposed too. Upon excess inhalation a person will experience lightheadedness and vertigo, but can also damage the heart and nervous system until the person suffocates. However, there can be too much of this. This excess carbon dioxide that humans are adding to the atmosphere increases global temperatures. This causes climate changes that we are experiencing. Since 1960 CO2 has steadily been increasing in the atmosphere, which has caused the mean of temperatures to increase. Vehicle miles traveled have doubled from 1980 to 2004 and vehicles give off CO2.…

THE GREENHOUSE GASES TRAP HEAT AND INCREASE THE CLIMATE CHANGE Exposition The climate of this planet is constantly changing and evolving. The present average annual temperature is approximately as low as 59 degrees Fahrenheit and as high as 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit. The other types of resources suggest that today’s 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit is much warmer than the past temperature periods.…

Did you know that in 2016, 81.6% of CO2 emissions were from human activities? These large amounts of carbon emitted are used to do many things, but most of them are bad. The one I will be talking about is wildfires since it is impacted by climate change in a huge way. Wildfires are large, destructive fires that are started then spread fast over trees and brush. Three ways wildfires are affected by humans are: burning fossil fuels, leaving campfires unattended, and leaving cigarettes lit.…

One of the reasons why it exists as my favorite gene, is because the research lab that I am interning at studies this gene and its role in a very well known and unfortunate disease, biliary atresia. It also is one my favorites due to the fact that it has a lot of potential applications in studying other diseases or further research. These applications will be discussed shortly.…

being a prominent figure among ethnic minorities, Martin Luther King Jr., as evidenced by his support of sanitation workers in Memphis, supported any cause which he saw as worthy. What he saw worth in ; however, was not just the poor, the minorities, the disenfranchised, or the oppressed, but those who he saw as being slighted of true justice and true equality. Perhaps this mentality is what drove him to comment on environmental protection—a cause which not only affects minorities or the poor, but one which affects the world in the most unjust way. “By undermining or degrading humanity, we also undermine or degrade our ability to protect the environment.”…

For many centuries, it has been used a source of fuel. Many generations would not have been able to survive if it weren’t for the energy stored in coal. The book also does not fully discuss all of the uses of graphite.…

Wildfires can be used in ways that are good for that ecosystem. The good things that come from setting controlled fires stated on the fire and aviation article are that they reduces hazardous fuels, lessen the spread of pest insects and disease, remove all dead plants so that new plants have a place to grow, improves habitat for threatened and endangered species, and provide nutrients for the soil. Pacific Biodiversity Institute states that scientists report young-growth forests recovering from fire are home to more diverse species, in both plants and animals. An article written by U.S Army Sergeant Austan R. Owen states that "We use fire to enhance the pine and oak forest on post and build habitat for the endangered species, said Rex. "…

Hurricanes are benefitting from the effects of climate change. Humans should be concerned about how climate change intensifies natural disasters, more specifically hurricanes, for it affects our lives and the environment. Places susceptible to hurricanes, such as the Gulf of Mexico and Eastern Pacific Ocean, will be hit by more intense storms in the future if we are not mindful of how to slow down climate change. Hurricanes are formed when the moist air from the surface of oceans rise and meets cooler air as it rises.…

It is easy for us to neglect the immediate and colossus problems plaguing our world, because the biggest problems, the ones that affect not only our future generations here in America, but the future generations across the globe, seem like they are flames, too bright to look at. We know it is there, yet instead of trying to put out the fires, we turn away, hoping someone else will eventually do it for us. One of the biggest, if not the biggest, flame destroying our world is the unbelievably high amounts of fossil fuels that companies are using all across the world. It is time to stop being spectators, watching the world be engulfed in flames, it is time to finally acknowledge that there is a problem with how fossil fuels are being used today, and it is time to actually take steps individually to douse the flames.…
