Did you know that 25% of the money spent on student sport injuries in 2005 where from cheerleading? This shows that it is very dangerous just like other sports. Cheer is a sport where you learn dance routines and cheers. You cheer for a football or basketball team, but you can also go to competitions. One thing about cheer is there are a lot of possible injuries like broken bones and even concussions. In cheer you stunt which is where people are holding someone (the flyer) in the air. In some colleges cheer is a really big deal. They hold competitions and prepare hard and complex routines to compete with. “The NCA College Nationals are held in Daytona Beach, Florida. This competition has been put on annually for more than 20 years. College cheerleading teams from all over the country compete for the national champions title. The competition offers different divisions to accommodate teams from community colleges to Division I universities. Most college cheerleaders start training for nationals the day after they make the team” (Bembry 2015). The fact that a nationally ranked organization has put this on for more than 20 years proves that they think it is a sport. Also to put something this big on they must have a big audience which shows that many people think that cheerleading is a sport. They have to train very hard for these competitions many weeks in advance. “USA cheerleaders advertise and support the university at a variety of public appearances hosted by local middle schools or large corporate conventions. The team intends to make sure the University of South Alabama is presented as the great establishment it is. Last, but not least, they train to compete for a spot at National Collegiate Association College Nationals” (Bembry 2015). If cheerleaders are going to make public appearances then people have to like them and like what they do. If someone likes cheer then they most likely will consider it a sport.
