Technique: learning to use arts language, conventions, styles. Working respectfully with props, instruments and other equipment. Making: To complete my storying journey I needed to use computer and video recording and editing software to be able to record and edit my Arts Making piece of work. As I recorded my video (many times!), I would watch the video afterward and take note of areas where I could improve, such as voice projection, better eye contact, telling my story succinctly and using communicative expression. As I reflected on each video and attempted another take, I saw that each time I was improving with the presentation of my story and I was learning techniques to better my arts performance for future arts making.

Making: In the Arts Responding activity I used observation by viewing other past student’s videos of their story journey and I considered their different styles of performance and collected ideas on how I could improve the quality of my own performance when communicating my own journeying story to others.

Responding: In the Arts Responding activity it was necessary for me to attend to careful and considered looking, viewing and listening while watching the video I needed to respond to. I was able to list the different elements of drama and as I was watching the movie I could mentally attribute many of the elements of drama to the scenes that were being shown. As I was able to observe this it gave me many scenes from the movie to show examples from in my writing.

Question, explain & evaluate your work. Making: In the Arts Making activity it was essential for me to constantly review and evaluate the work that I was presenting and question whether I could do it better with another video take. This was important in improving the quality of my performance in my journey story piece and producing a piece of work that would engage the

While I was telling my story, I was very aware that the audience I was speaking to was aimed at primary school aged children. I made sure that the terminology that I used in my story was appropriate for younger children to be able to comprehend and that the themes and ideas used in my story were able to be understood by primary school aged students. I also used my voice to create expression in the story and hand actions as I was describing different scenes in my story to keep children interested and engaged in my

I was able to see a different approach on how to grab the audience’s attention from the other director’s performance. The scene at the same time was very comical, but also held you on the edge of your seat with its high tension and wonderful transformation of a relationship between two characters on stage. This really grabbed my attention and taught me that a transformation of a relationship on stage really enriches the performance. Overall, the knowledge I gained from this activity in class really helped me establish a foundation and base for the mechanics of…

“In order to innovate, you must play with fire”, Tony award winning director, Julie Taymor, often expresses. To make something new and create, one must be willing to play with the unknown. To do what is dangerous and expose himself or herself truthfully for the sake of play. As an actor, there must always be this curiosity to play with fire and do what is unexpected not only to the audience member, but the actor as well. This risk is the most difficult challenge to any artist for they must harness courage within themselves to go into the unknown and reap the benefits of their adventure.…

Theater offers the audience a glimpse into the lives of the people portrayed. Smith does a dramatic interpretation of the different people she has interviewed. By acting out the interviews rather than quoting them in a article or taking a video and risk compromising anonymity, she is able to connect with the audience better. Smith also uses a technique that implements video alongside spoken performance to get her point across. In this case, it is very successful because the snippets of video used build on the narrative of the people being interviewed.…

Imagine a ceiling covered in Styrofoam cups assembled together so intricately and catching the light so meticulously that the material used looks far more advanced than an everyday manufactured item. Imagine a giant cube of toothpicks being held together by just the weight of the other surrounding toothpicks, causing it to be so fragile and vulnerable yet so sturdy at the same time. Imagine a plethora of metal Slinky’s intertwined and entangled in such a way it looks as though they are wrestling with themselves while still supporting the entirety of itself. Throughout the past few weeks of Studies in English Education, the main aspect that has been addressed is the term ‘multiliteracies.’ From completing this portfolio and attending each of the workshops, I have learned that to become a text producer I need to be involved with the variety of functions in language and literacy. Hill (2012) states that ‘to be multiliterate means to be literate in print-based and new communication technologies’ (p. 361). Such technologies include ‘electronic literacies, technoliteracies, digital literacies, visual literacies and print-based literacies’ (Hill 2012, p. 361).…

An act orchestrated by an artist, performance art bases itself on time. Performance art usually contains four main elements: time, space, the body, and the interaction between the audience and artist. Its major purpose is to challenge the conventions of the traditional visual art such as painting and sculpture. When these forms cannot serve or answer an artists ' needs, artists turn to performance to help them explore new ideas and find new audiences. The body and performance art challenges the idea of the Modernist movement during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.…
