Analysis: Exit Through The Gift Shop

The documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop” depicts the transformation of a family man obsessed with filming every waking moment, Thierry Guetta, into a self-absorbed and self-proclaimed artist, Mr. Brainwash. In capturing this man’s journey, the documentary brings to light two significant issues in the world of art. The first being the use of assistants to create artwork and the second being the instantaneous success of an artist; whom without the endorsements of already renowned and respected street artists would have never amounted to anything noteworthy.

An artist must encompass every characteristic, if not, then the artist is no more an artist than myself. Throughout my life, I have had an innumerable amount of ideas; however, I do not have the skill, ability, devotion, and passion necessary to express those ideas through art, therefore I am not nor will I ever be an artist. Brainwash; I find this disturbing. Mr. Brainwash is an unproven artist; who uses assistance to mass print photo-shopped images, then signs his name on the printed image, and sells the images for an outrageous and random price. He is able to get away with the excessive prices of his artwork due solely to the endorsements he received; I believe this reveals that many people in the world of art do not care about the effort and talent of an artist, but the name that either endorses the artist or the name of the artist
