Do You Speak America?
Robert MacNeil took us on a very long and existing journey about the linguistic diversity in the United States. His aim through this journey is to explore English language and how people use it and what reasons affected the language. We all know that the formal spoken language in the United States is English language, but after watching this documentary our idea has changed. Thorough MacNeil’s journey, it is appeared that the situation is different and not all American people speak the same version of English or the same dialect or accent. We must accept any dialect or accent in our society. As a way of respecting others, we have to respect their dialect and their way of speaking. For instance, African American Vernacular English is known by many as incorrect and as lazy English, and people who speak this language is treaded badly. This will affect those who grow up speaking it and make the feel inferior. However, some dialects are considered a rhetoric. As a linguist, I can not say that to any language in the world because every language is distinctive and has its own systematic and rule governed in which speakers can easily acquired that language. This problem must be treated in order to help those who talking this language. I think the best solution is through education. People must be encouraged to study and speak and communicate with the standard language in the formal settings and situations, and they can use their vernacular inside their community. Furthermore, media plays an important role in changing people’s view to these dialects. Media sometimes make fun of such dialects in some programs in order to entrain people. Thus, media must change its role and respect people by showing that these dialects are very normal.
In conclusion, diversity is very common phenomena in all societies. Societies need to accept these differences and respect every dialect. It is very interesting and important at the same time to study language in our community and know more about the changing process of our language over years. Also, it is very important to study the effects and the factors that cause this diversity between people in one
